Ireland, raced in England and was undefeated as a racehorse, winning all seven of his starts with six stakes races including the Champion Breeders’ Stakes and the Champagne Stakes. The Tetrarch dominated his competition in these races, winning by 3 to 10-lengths. He was the 1913 Champion 2 Year Old and it
is reported by many that he was the fastest 2 year old of the 20th Century.
The Tetrarch was preparing to run at three when he was injured and retired to stud. He would prove to be an important sire despite having fertility problems. His daughter Mumtaz Mahal won seven with two seconds from 10 starts, including seven stakes including the Spring Stakes and the Queen Mary Stakes. She was the 1923 Champion 2 Year Old and Champion Sprinter. It is interesting that her only unplaced start was at one mile and the rest of her races were at 5 and 6-furlongs.
This is where we introduce The Tetrarch as an influence of Quarter Horse racing. The Quarter Horse racing sires Depth Charge, Jackstraw and Spotted Bull show The Tetrarch through Stefan The Great, a son
of The Tetrarch. Easy Jet gets The Tetrarch through his second dam Lena Valenti by Gray Dream by Gino by Tetratema by
The Tetrarch. Azure Te has three ties in his pedigree to The Tetrarch through Nasrullah, Quickly and Eight Thirty, as they all carrying the blood of The Tetrarch.
The dam of Romany Chi is Romany Lass by Manna by Phalaris, who is out of Bromus. Manna gives Romany Royal a breeding pattern of 5x5x5 to Phalaris. When we add Hainault, a half-brother to Phalaris, in the pedigree of Grey Sovereign, we get a breeding pattern of 6x5x6x6 to Bromus in the pedigree of Romany Royal.
Bromus provides an interesting source of speed in her pedigree. She won the Seaton Delaval Plate as a 2 year old. Bromus is by Sainfoin by Springfield, and her dam is Cheery by St Simon. The dam of Cheery is Sunrise
by Springfield. This gives Bromus a breeding pattern of 2x3 to Springfield. Springfield had 19 starts, 17 wins and two seconds at sprint and stamina distances. He won stakes races at distances of 4 furlongs to 10 furlongs, including the now Group one Champion Stakes at 10 furlongs and the July Stakes at 6 furlongs. He may have won at all distances, but he is noted as a source of speed.
Jo-Ann-Cat, the dam of Beduino, is by King Ranch-bred Rejected, who raced from two to five with stakes wins in the Santa Anita Handicap-G1 and Hollywood Gold Cup-G1 and amassed earnings of $544,500.
The sire of Rejected is Revoked by Blue Larkspur by Black Servant. The dam of Revoked is Gala Belle by Sir Gallahad II. The
the top earner sired by Beduino is 2-time champion strawberry silk, winner of the 1989 All American Futurity under Jacky Martin for trainer Jack Brooks.
dam of Rejected is By Line by Blenheim. The dam of By Line is Sable Scarf by Sir Gallahad II. This gives Rejected a 3x3 breeding pattern to Sir Gallahad II, by Teddy.
Jo-Ann-Cat was bred by Harold Kitchens and so was her dam, the unraced Quick
Eye by Depth Charge by Bold Venture. Depth Charge is out of Quickly, who is out of Stephanie by Stefan The Great by The Tetrarch. The dam of Quick Eye is Eye To Eye, another unraced mare who is by Teddy. This gives Jo-Ann-Cat a breeding pattern of 5x5x3 to Teddy. Teddy is also the sire of Bull Dog, who is a full brother to Sir Gallahad II. Bull Dog is the sire of Spotted Bull and the grandsire of Jackstraw.
An Outcr Oss
Beduino would make his home at Vessels Stallion Farm where he sired 603 starters and 436 winners from 722 foals. They earned 496 ROM, with 40 stakes winners and 48 stakes
placed runners. His foals earned $13,099,594 and his leading money earner is Strawberry Silk, with earnings of $1,266,263. Beduino became the broodmare sire of horses that won $28,180,360, with 1,497 starters, 1,107 ROM and 112 stakes winners. The leading money earner is Dash Thru Traffic with earnings of $1,056,943.
Beduino retiring to stud served as an outcross on the prominent bloodlines of horses like Joe Reed II, Three Bars and Top Deck. This is the role that Thoroughbred stallions brought in as sires of Quarter Horses. The running Champions sired
by Beduino give us an indication of
the bloodlines he was successful with - Champions Strawberry Silk, Indigo Illusion, Tolltac, Brigand Silk, Chingaderos and Femmes Frolic.
Strawberry Silk was the 1989 Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. She is out of Painted Bug
