it’s been a very good year for Painted Lies. Tom Maher’s gelding made his fifth visit to the win- ner’s circle in nine outs thus far in 2012, after
scoring a neck victory over Huckleberry Mojito to claim first place in the $39,060 Adequan Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge-G3 on Sept. 15.
Painted Lies’ sophomore campaign has been very consistent; he’s hit the board in eight of nine starts. The gelding has seven lifetime wins, and the $17,967 payday
boosted his lifetime earnings
to $137,930.
Painted Lies will have the chance to increase his bank- roll in a big way at the end of October. This win quali- fied him for the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G1, which will take place Oct. 27 at this same track.
Huckleberry Mojito actually held the lead
most of the way but, after breaking from the seven gate, Painted Lies drove past Huckleberry Mojito during the final 100 yards and outnodded the even-money favor- ite at the wire.
An Amber Blair trainee, Painted Lies cov- ered the 400 yards in :19.875, registering a 93 speed index. Jockey Cody Smith was aboard as Painted Lies collected his second stakes win in
his 19th career start. The geld- ing also finished first in the Minnesota Stallion Breeders/ NCQHRA Derby earlier this year at Canterbury Park.
Bob Moore Farms LLC bred Painted Lies, who was foaled in Oklahoma out of the unraced mare Teller Lies. Bob Moore Farms also owns Teller Lies, who has produced two starters among six foals. Painted Lies is her only stakes winner to date.
Huckleberry Mojito (Feature Mr Jess-Eye Opening Special) finished second and saw a three-race win streak snapped that included two stakes races at Canterbury. Owned by LMR 2011, the filly is trained by Ed Hardy and had Juan Vazquez aboard.
Mr Corona Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue- Corona With Ice) hit the board in third for owner/breeder Nancy McCoy. Charley Hunt is the trainer and Clyde Smith did the riding.
Specials Gold (Voghts Gold-Special Anywhere), Crowned Silver (Corona For Me-Sky Glow), Shake N Shazoom (Shazoom- Shaky Kate), Valiant Corona (Valiant Hero- Corona Three), Prime Country (Country Chicks Man-Mamaimcominhome), Tilghman C (Check Him Out-Three Times Four) and Surfin Waves (Ocean Runaway-Lady Dee Vee Em) completed the field.

John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge

by Tracy Gantz
when Heroes Heart won the Sept. 15
John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge, she sported some very familiar con- nections. Just two races previously, in the Red Cell Prairie Meadows Distance Challenge-G3, Call Her Hero, a daughter of Valiant Hero, owned by Horton Racing LLC, trained by Charles Hunt, and ridden by Stormy Smith, came home victorious. In the Juvenile Challenge, it was Heroes Heart’s turn,
with the same sire, owner, trainer, and jockey.
The two races couldn’t have differed more. Call Her Hero traversed 870 yards primarily on the front end to win, whereas Heroes Heart came from far back over just 350 yards. She did it from the outside, unable to see SM Lookatthatfurr, who
led on the rail. Yet Heroes Heart never gave up, and her
momentum carried her a half-length past SM Lookatthatfurr for the win in :17.621.
Second and third in her first two starts in Oklahoma, Heroes Heart broke her maiden in her Juvenile trial. She took that heat by three-quarters of a length and qualified the fastest. By adding the final, Heroes Heart earned a berth in the Oct. 27 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2, also at
Prairie Meadows.
Todd and Jodi Horton
bred Heroes Heart in Texas from winner Sweethearts Quicksix. The mare has produced four winners from five starters, including 2008 AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship-G1 winner Snow Burn. The second dam, winner Sweetheart Stones, is a full sister to graded stakes-winning Blazin Stones.
Wayne Garner owns and trains SM Lokatthatfurr (Furrtreeous-SM Country Princess). Alejandro Luna rode the gelding. In five previous starts, SM Lookatthatfurr had finished second once and third twice.
Scott and Darlene Hay’s homebred Nomomonkeybizness (Easy Winning Jet-Hot Stuffs Domino) finished third with Berkley Packer aboard. Robert Stout trains the gelding, who ran second to Heroes Heart in their trial and was the second-fastest qualifier.
Rounding out the field were Hastabealeader (Hasta Be Fast-Leadmetoyourladder), Outlaw Memories (Illegal Runaway-Miss Speedy Memories), Diamond Version (Stoli-The Jubilee Diamond), Last First Kiss (Shazoom-Top Shawne), Cats Meow Too (Shazoom-Turner On), Girls Don’t Seis (Tres Seis-Girling), and Natovas Courage (Captain Courage-Natovas Dasher).
