honoroso had threatened to produce winning efforts in his three most recent races, including a nose defeat in his Derby trial on Aug. 26. The 3-year-
old bay gelding delivered a triumphant performance when it mattered most, vanquishing seven rivals in the $22,355 Hadtobenuts Derby Sept. 9 at Sandy Downs.
Ridden by Alan Corson, Honoroso finished with a strong surge to win the 400-yard test, capturing the fourth race of his career and first stakes race. Owned by Richard Gardner and Jim Hanson of Rigby, Idaho, Honoroso was never far off the lead. He broke in second position, rallied to the lead in the stretch and pulled clear late for a decisive win. He covered the distance in :20.059, defeating race favorite and fastest qualifier The Streakin Clean and jockey Nikeela Black by a half-length.
Saddled by trainer Mark Hanson, Honoroso lifted his career bankroll to $21,630 with the $8,942 winner’s share of the purse. Bred by Sassy Farms, Honoroso
is the only foal of racing age out of Abla Espanol, an unraced sister to Grade 1 placed Wanta Be Free.
Runner-up The Streakin Clean (Streakin La Jolla-Theslatesclean) was outfinished late by the winner. Trained by Monte Arrossa and owned by Leonardo and Javier Olmos, the filly entered the Derby off consecutive wins this year.
Ive Been Special Too (Snowbound-TB-Ive Been Around) finished in third under Tyson Lusk. Michael Monson trains the gelding, winner of last year’s Idaho Cup Futurity, for owners Jim and Melissa Bernard.
Reporting home behind the top three were Country Girls Charm (Country Chicks Man-Curls Girls), Feature Miss Frame (Feature Mr Jess-Go for Fame), Alittlebitivory (Ivory James-Megs Little Sister), Jumpn Black Flash (Tac It Like a Man-Stuckonafeeling) and Flyin Rose (Fly With Honor-The Rose Princess). Painted Sable was the last horse to load into the starting gates for the Merial Prairie Meadows Distaff Challenge, but when the gates opened,
Painted Sable was the first horse to reach the finish line, three-quarters ahead of Believers Gathering. With the win, Tommy Hays and Bobby Barnett’s
4-year-old mare improved her career record to 7-2-3 in 19 outs, and registered her second victory in stakes com- pany. More importantly, Painted Sable also qualified for the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship, being held on Oct. 27, also at Prairie Meadows.
Starting from the outside of the six-horse field, Painted Sable made a clean break but saw Believers Gathering sprint into the early lead. Jockey Stormy Smith successfully urged Painted Sable to make a bid, pulling into the lead to take the win. An Ed Hardy trainee, Painted Sable completed the 400-yard trip in :19.879. She earned $12,735 to push her career earnings to $143,192. Both of Painted Sable’s wins this year have come in stakes company; she also won the Hill Country Dash at the Gillespie County Fair in July.
Lance Robinson and Max Anderson bred Painted Sable out of the 2000 mare Sables Dash, who has nine starters from 14 total foals. Painted Sable is her second stakes winner, joining Mr Jess Dash, a stakes winner in Mexico.
Believers Gathering (Agouti-None As Easy), the runner-up, is owned by Pat and Walt Fletcher. Trainer Charley Hunt did the prep work and Cody Smith drew the riding assignment.
Im a Feature Girl (Feature Mr Jess-This Girl Is Special) hit the board in third for owner Jorge Haddad. Kasey Willis is the trainer and Agustin Silva was in the irons.
Streakin Rare (Fredricksburg-Regally Rare), Rumba Casino (Streakin La Jolla-Go Street Music) and Paint Or More (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Tell Her More) completed the field.
