 Red Cell PRM Distance Ch.-G3
Call heR heRo
by Tracy Gantz
Call Her Hero emphatically proved that she wanted a route of ground in her very first 870-yard race. In five starts last year at 2 going 350 yards or less, the
best she managed was a second and two thirds. This year at three in a maiden race at Fair Meadows, she won her first race around the hook by eight lengths.
Could Call Her Hero step it up to stakes com- pany? She answered that question just as resound- ingly, blowing away her trial competition by 1 3/4 lengths to become the fastest qualifier for the Sept. 15 Red Cell Prairie Meadows Distance Challenge-G3. The Charley Hunt trainee returned as the 4-5 favorite for the final to make it three in a row at 870.
Colosso got the jump on Call Her Hero out of the gate, but the 3-year-old filly and jockey Stormy Smith quickly took the lead. Free Stater on the inside battled with her to midstretch. Call Her Hero then put Free Stater away and held off the closing LFR Simply The Best to win by a half-length in :46.052. That earned the winner a berth in the Oct. 27 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship-G1.
Horton Racing bred Call Her Hero by crossing Valiant Hero with the Thoroughbred mare Shady Caller. Horton raced Shady Caller, who earned $52,750 and finished third in the 2005 Lady’s Secret Stakes. The mare has produced one Thoroughbred starter and one Quarter Horse starter, and both are winners.
Merritt Pride bred and trains second-place LFR Simply The Best (Heza Fast Man-Stunning Rockette) and co-owns her with John Witte. LFR Simply The Best was ridden by Berkley Packer.
Hunt also trains J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley’s Free Stater (Separatist-Free Bird Fly-TB), who finished third with Troy Crissup in the saddle.
Rounding out the field were Yin Your Eyes (Eye Yin You-Apollo Snowbound), Pa (Scrutinizer-Dorothy Dorothy), and Colosso (Corona Czech-Splash N The Moon). Jess Another Reb was scratched.
Canada Cup Derby

last September, CR Lil Bit Of Ivory settled for third place in the Canada Cup Futurity-RG3 at Whoop Up Downs in Lethbridge. The gelding would not be
denied one year later, winning the $22,702 Canada Cup Derby on Sept. 16 in a runaway.
CR Lil Bit Of Ivory logged his first carer stakes victory for owner Cecil Wiest, and posted his fourth win in 12 starts. CR Lil Bit Of Ivory has hit the board in every start to date, including last year’s Canada Cup Futurity and a third-place showing in the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge this August.
In the Canada Cup Derby, CR Lil Bit Of Ivory covered the 400 yards in :20.030, posting a 93 speed index. The Allen Goodsell trainee broke from the two gate and quickly grabbed the lead, widening the gap late to win by a commanding two lengths.
Jockey Teagan Oulton was aboard CR Lil Bit Of Ivory, the only starter yet produced by his dam, A Quick Glance. The mare made only one out before becoming a broodmare, and CR Lil Bit Of Ivory is her only foal of racing age. Dean and Jacque Johnson bred CR Lil Bit Of Ivory, whose total bankroll reached $35,328 with this $10,216 payday.
Ms Okay Okie reached the wire second but was disqualified to eighth for bumping. That elevated CR Leading La Jolla to runner-up honors. Don
No Runner owns and trains CR Leading La Jolla (Special Leader-Fashionismyattitude), who had Jose Guerrero in the irons. Northforkzoom (Mezoomn-Rj Bitterroot Babe) officially finished third for owners Glenn Willis and Tom Copithorne. The William Leech trainee had Logun Gotham aboard.
KG Warrior (Special Red Warrior-Win Thru Traffic), Snake Eyed Gal (Royal Miracle Dip-Miss Casino Gal), KG Prairie Pride (Latest Version-Im The Wind), LL Blade Runner (Jumpn-I Hear A Melody) and Ms Okay Okie (Okey Dokey Dale- Peggys Special) completed the field.
GlQha stallion service sale Futurity
Casey CoRoNa
by Michael Compton
Casey Corona justified his odds-on favoritism in the GLQHA Stallion Service Sale Futurity at Mt. Pleasant Meadows on Sept. 16. Piloted by
Richard Rettele, Casey Corona led throughout the 350-yard feature, turning back runner-up Request And Achieve by a neck in :18.431. It was the initial stakes score for Casey Corona, a Walter Harrison homebred who has now won three of five lifetime appearances for trainer Carol Rettele.
The Indiana Downs shipper broke his maiden in his second lifetime start in June. He followed that win with an unplaced effort in the Heartland Futurity at Indiana Downs before winning a 350-yard test in his first start at Mt. Pleasant Meadows last time out.
Casey Corona is out of the multiple stakes- winning mare Precious Debutante, also a Harrison homebred. Precious Debutante is the dam of four other stakes horses including nine-time stakes winner Fearles Fred, graded stakes winner Ida Snow Man, stakes winner Mr Corona To You, who won this race in 2010, and stakes-placed Code 36. All eight of her foals are starters with total earnings of $565,292.
The top three finishers needed no introductions. Casey Corona defeated both the second and third- place finishers last time they met as well. Request And Achieve (Achievement-Hooked Request) just missed in her first stakes try for owners David and Shirley Gates. She was ridden by Lee Gates for trainer David Gates. Conditioner Brad Gates saddled the third-place finisher, Im A Money Maker, for owner Kim Gates. Im A Money Maker (Planetary-Surely Dash N Tuff) was ridden by Natividad Alcala.
Completing the order of finish were Cheever (Achievement-Dash for Spirit), Striking Triumphant (Striking Distance-Let Her Groove), Winning Fury (Furyofthewind-The Winning Pac), Shake E Lee (Mito Corona-Shake Em Lady Jane) and Grab the Shotgun (Shotgun Windy-Grab the Reign-TB).
