it might have been a new racetrack and a differ- ent state, but most of the runners who lined up for the Sept. 16 He Flys Handicap had met each
other before, primarily in Idaho. Los Alamitos held the He Flys for horses that had been racing in the Intermountain and Northwest regions, and David Newbold’s Lil Bitts A Dash defeated them all.
Though Sissis Little Nipper, who won six in
a row before a recent second, went off as the 5-2 favorite, Lil Bitts A Dash made it clear who was best. Under Francisco Rubio, the four-year-old gelding broke on top and led throughout to win easily by 1 1/4 lengths in :17.484 for the 350 yards.
Lin Melton took over Lil Bitts A Dash’s training at Los Alamitos, as he did last year when the gelding ran fifth in the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap-G3. In Idaho when trained by Jake Newbold, Lil Bitts A Dash won the 2011 Bitterroot Derby and finished third in the 2010 Bitterroot Futurity.
Patterson Livestock bred Lil Bitts A Dash in Utah from unraced A Lil Bitts. Lil Bitts A Dash is the mare’s first winner from two starters.
Bob and Scott Giltner’s homebred Vodka Soda No Fruit (Shazoom-Cash Curve) finished second, with Never Marin in the irons. The six-year-old gelding won the 2011 Jack Rhoden Memorial Bonus Challenge and finished second in the same stakes this year.
R Chump Change (Cashin Man-Jewel Cartel) finished third for jockey Joel Cruz and trainer Justin Clark. Travis Offret, Allan Goldman, and Tom Peffer own the four-year-old gelding, who finished third in the 2011 John Deere Stakes Division 2 at Los Alamitos.
Completing the field were Blue Piranha (Fishers Dash-My Blueberry Chick), RTM Philbin Rd (Dashair-Streakin Mirage), Sissis Little Nipper (Mountains Majesty-Sissy Road), Classic Blush (A Classic Dash-A Royal Blush), and Cool Cash Corona (Mr Corona Cash-First N Favorite).

Margaritas N Coronas might be a dangerous combination in a bar, and a gelding with that moniker proved a danger to nine other juveniles in
the Sept. 16 The Plan Handicap at Los Alamitos. Going right to the front under jockey Rodrigo
Aceves, Margaritas N Coronas had to contend with Checkspeed and BF Memory Lane closing from the outside. Margaritas N Coronas was able to hold them off to win by a head in :17.689 for the 350 yards.
The Plan Handicap was for horses that had been racing in the Intermountain and Northwest regions. Margaritas N Coronas began his career at Dixie Downs in Utah, where he broke his maiden. He won one of four races at Les Bois Park in Idaho before finishing sixth in an allowance race at Los Alamitos. Bret Vickery trains him for Robert Hickman.
Gregory and Renee Hickman bred Margaritas N Coronas in Washington. Fly Margarita, the dam of Margaritas N Coronas, won the 2003 Seven Feathers Firecracker Futurity. She has produced two winners from two starters.
Checkspeed (Check Him Out-Speedy Speedette) was second under jockey Gregorio Arriaga. John Wells trains the gelding for J.P. Sample and Emily Lawrence. Checkspeed’s best previous race was a third at Les Bois.
Birrell Farms’ homebred BF Memory Lane (Maknmoves-BF Lanes Game) ran third with Cody Jensen aboard. Jim Hanson conditions the filly at Los Alamitos, and while trained by Ron Moosman in Utah, she won the Beehive Futurity.
Completing the field were Makn A Legacy (Maknmoves-Ms Legacy Lane), Furious Jess (Fly Jess Fly-Shes Furious), R Forte (Shazoom-Jewel Cartel), The Midnite Caller (A Regal Choice-Cee The Blurr), Thisperksisamiracle (Royal Miracle Dip-This Perks Is Royal), Cir Perfect Corona (Southern Corona-Cir Perfect Style), and HRH Honor Dat Cash (Corona Cartel-Juno Dat Honor).
