Future of Iowa Stakes
CATCHINFIRE
by John Moorehouse
Catchin Fire could not be caught in the Future of Iowa Stakes, leading at every call of the $70,020 event held Oct. 10 at Prairie Meadows.
A five-year-old mare, Catchin Fire logged her seventh win in 24 overall outs and notched her third victory in stakes company. She also won last year’s version of the Future Of Iowa Stakes. The $28,080 prize from this win boosted her cumulative earnings to $180,591.
Prepped by Kasey Willis for owner Thomas Lepic, Catchin Fire broke on top from the 10-gate and never relinquished the lead. She was running in front by a head at the first call, pulled away to open a 1-length advantage as she entered the stretch, then held on to win by a 1/2-length margin. Cesar Gomez was aboard for the stakes-winning 350-yard trip, which was completed in :18.219 into a 6 mph headwind.
Jim Harvey bred Catchin Fire and home-bred her dam, Rodeo Rona. An unraced 2001 mare, Rodeo Rona has five offspring, all starters. However, Catchin Fire is the only stakes winner in the brood.
Painted Summer (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Summertime Runaway) secured runner-up honors by a head. Movin On owns the filly, who is trained by Jason Olmstead and had Cody Smith aboard. TRS Top Shot Riley (Hot Shot Dash-Sheza Friendly Kas) hit the board in third place for owner/breeder Vernon Hammes. Shane Miller is the trainer and David Pinon drew the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish was TRS Amazing Lexi (Just Amazing Jess-Maydecks Request), Tell Her Shes Queen (Teller Cartel-Queen Of Anywhere), Shake Dos Violets (Dos Poruno-Shakem Daisy), Jessgowithit (Talkalota Bull-RLR Jess Blue Heaven), Squeakie Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Pipsqueak Shazoom), Takin Okey Dokey (Okey Dokey Dale-Takin A Hike), Gogos Storm (Maze Craze TB-First To Gogo) & Shesa Cartel Rose (Cartels Feature-Shesa Eye of Rose).

TRS Amazing Amanda failed to find the wire first in 7 previous tries before breaking her maiden in the lucrative Polk County Derby at Prairie Meadows on Iowa Quarter Horse Champions Night Oct. 10.
Despite swerving out at the start, TRS Amazing Amanda gathered herself quickly and rallied strongly on the far outside through the lane. With Raul Gutierrez aboard, the 3-year-old filly nabbed early leader CR Wagon Man and Toms Big Time Girl right at the finish to prevail by a nose in the $122,560 event.
In winning for the first time in her career, TRS Amazing Amanda covered the 400 yards in :20.331 for trainer Zachary Quezada. The win boosted her earnings to $55,542.
Vernon Hammes bred TRS Amazing Amanda from winless mare Miss Leading Coins. TRS Amazing Amanda is her lone stakes winner from 2 starters.
Toms Big Time Girl and CR Wagon Man
were inseparable behind the winner, finishing in a dead heat for the place spot. Toms Big Time Girl (Bigtime Favorite-Coronation Time), owned by Kylie Wellington and trained by Kelly Wellington, was ridden by Kenny Muntz.
CR Wagon Man (PYC Paint Your Wagon-LW Evening Lajolla), with Cody Smith up, races for Dick and Curt Tobin and is trained by Jason Olmstead.
Completing the field was TRS Just Like Jase (Just Amazing Jess-TRS Dashin Diamond),
Papas Kiss (Pappasito-Easy Sailin Kiss), Paint Me Anywhere (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Queen Of Anywhere), WRS Secret Dream (No Secrets Here- WRS Dare To Dream), in a DH for 8th were My Girls Toasted (Toast To Dash-Girling) & Quickie Rickie (First Dinastia-Special Stepper), followed by We Be Cattin (Red Storm Cat-Dashing On The Moon).

Ajs High entered the Altoona Derby as a heavy betting favorite and met those lofty expec- tations, making a strong final push to win the $106,477 stakes on Oct. 10 at Prairie Meadows. This fifth stakes victory of Ajs High’s career improved his overall record to 8-0-1 in 12 starts, and the $42,591 winner’s prize boosted his bankroll to $325,085.
Ajs High broke in the middle of the pack in a 10-horse field, but was lugging along in 9th at the 1st call. Ajs High was 7th as then-leader The Big Time entered the stretch, but came flying to reach the wire sporting a 3/4-length margin of victory.
Michael Teel owns Ajs High, a Charley Hunt trainee who had Stormy Smith aboard. The victori- ous trip took :19.863, registering an 89 speed index while running into an 8 mph headwind.
Teel also bred Ajs High, who is one of two stakes winners out of his dam, Regally Rare, a 1997 mare who holds three stakes wins herself among nine all- time victories. The other stakes winner in the brood is Struttin High, who boasts four triumphs in stakes company and two track records in a career that has reaped just more than $350,000 in prize money.
A 56-1 longshot, Bling Dynasty (Mr Jess Perry-Ity Bitty Rarity) secured runner-up honors for Reliance Ranches LLC. Kasey Willis trains the filly and Ramiro Garcia did the riding. Willis also trains Specials Jess (Spit Curl Jess-Special Anywhere), who placed third for Alexia Mehrle and had Cesar Gomez in the irons.
