by Tracy Gantz
The Thoroughbreds tried to catch him, but 6-year- old Quarter Horse gelding Run Raging Rhino Run held them all off in the 870-yard $20,000 Wheatland Handicap at Los Alamitos on April 13.
Run Raging Rhino Run and two other Quarter Horses faced five Thoroughbreds in the Wheatland Handicap. When the gates opened, Run Raging Rhino Run and jockey Minor Arana zipped to the lead and never let anyone pass them. At one point, Run Raging Rhino Run had a 2-length advantage. The Thoroughbreds narrowed the gap in the stretch, but Run Raging Rhino Run scored by a neck in wire-to-wire fashion, stopping the timer in :44.856.
