                                Golden Spike Futurity
VALENTINA RELENTLESS
by Danny Camp
Valentina Relentless was certainly relentless in the $51,448 Golden Spike Futurity at Weber Downs on April 27.
The filly came into the finals carrying the fifth fastest qualifying time after finishing second to the fastest qualifier - Pitchforks Panther - in the April 13 trials, which were her first start.
In the finals, however, Valentina Relentless broke from the 1-post like she was shot from a slingshot. She exited the gates on the lead and never looked back. Valentina Relentless and her rider kept to the task, and they had a 3/4-length lead at the top of the stretch. The farther she went, the farther her lead increased. The filly crossed the finish line 1 1/2-length in front of the field in a wire-to-wire performance.
Valentina Relentless brought home the $20,878 winner’s share of the purse for owner/trainer Kenia Pinela Marioni. Jockey Alan Miramontes seemed happy to be enjoying the ride. The filly’s record is now 2-1(1)-1-0 - a fine start to a promising career.
Buddy Albin bred Valentina Relentless out of winner Ba Little Mini, who earned nearly $15,000 in her career. Ba Little Mini is the dam of four foals, and Valentina Relentless is the first starter in the brood. Ba Little Mini is a full sister to stakes placed Little PYC, who was third in the 2013 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity as well as a finalist in the
2013 Remington Park Juvenile, 2014 Canterbury Park Derby and 2014 Altoona Derby. Valentina Relentless’s second dam is 2-time winner Mini Melt, who produced 100% winners from three starters.
The fastest qualifier Pitchforks Panther (Dominyun-Special Lady Panther) broke late, but made a sharp effort and finished second under Ramiro Garcia for owner Victor Ortiz and trainer Roberto Treto. The sorrel gelding was making his second start in the Golden Spike Futurity.
VF Silverback (Ivory James-Perrys Folly) and Oscar Cervantes finished in third place for owners Kyle and Kelly Cook. Trained by Jay Pitcher, the colt won his Golden Spike Futurity trial heat by 1 1/2-lengths.
Chance To Be Valiant (Jess Being Valiant-Last Chancer), Clear Winn Flyer (Clear Winn-Eye Opener Flying), Jims Highlite (Pappasito-Josie Bassett), Wagonfullofdarlings (Wagon Tales-Denim Darling), Jr Czech Dynasty (Jr Dynasty Mountain-Jr Czech Swing), Billy The Greight (Ivory Ink-Snow Queen), My Sweet Mia (A Mere Chocolate-Clydette Mia) completed the order of finish.
Louisiana Purchase Stakes
LITTLE TOY GUNS
by Tracy Gantz
Little Toy Guns took a big step up in class in the April 20 edition of the Louisiana Purchase Stakes at Delta Downs. It was the 4-year-old gelding’s first
stakes attempt, and he came through spectacularly. Sent away at 17-1 odds in the eight-horse field
under jockey Ricardo Hernandez Jr., Little Toy Guns was bumped at the start as he exited the three- gate. He didn’t let that deter him, however, as he flew to the lead and received the first call. Little Toy Guns pulled away to a length advantage midway through the 350 yards and ended up winning the event wire-to-wire by 1/2-length in :17.663.
Eliseo Celestino trains Little Toy Guns for owner Juan Montoya.
Prior to his Louisiana Purchase Stakes vic- tory, Little Toy Guns had won three of 10 starts, including another wire-to-wire event on Feb. 18 at Louisiana Downs.
Belinda Disotell bred Little Toy Guns in Louisiana from winner Strikeabye Baby. The second dam is the Thoroughbred City Rain, a half-sister to stakes winner Stone Rain.
Josue Huitron trained second-place Sizzlin On Da Bayou (Sizzlin Cartel-Eyejesslovelouisiana) for owner Joel Huitron. Guadaupe Lucio Jr. rode the 5-year-old gelding, who earlier this year ran second twice at Louisiana Downs.
Jorge Linares piloted Its What It Is (Game Patriot-Rebas In The House) to third for trainer Martin Trejo and owner Ascencion Cepeda. Its What It Is was coming off a second at Louisiana Downs.
Completing the field were Game Overtime (Fast Prize Jordan-Good Game Meg), Lil Bro Big Streak (Jet Black Patriot-Annas Streakin Dash), Flamin Hot Fortune (Jet Black Patriot-Toast To Fortune), Spit In My Corona (Spit Curl Jess-Fast Prize Corona), and MPS Triple Zazoom (Triple Vodka-Zazoom). Fast Dashin Perry and Jets Fast Dash were scratched.
Delta Dash
GUNSMOKE B
by Tracy Gantz
Gunsmoke B, at age 6, was the oldest participant in this year’s $27,700 Delta Dash Stakes at Delta Downs on April 19. He proved that he more
than belonged, zipping to the lead and winning the 250-yard race by 1/2-length in :13.178 under jockey Antonio Alberto.
Rogelio Marquez Jr. owns Gunsmoke B, hav- ing claimed the gelding for $10,000 at Evangeline Downs in late 2016. Gunsmoke B finished fifth the day of the claim and was moved up to fourth upon a disqualification. Gunsmoke B was winning his fourth consecutive race in the Delta Dash, coming off one win at Delta Downs and two at Evangeline. This was his first start of 2019.
Bielau Oaks bred Gunsmoke B in Louisiana from the Toast To Dash mare Dashing Pana. The mare won four stakes, including the 2006 Louisiana Downs Champions Classic-G2. Her foals include multiple graded stakes winner Daytona B.
Rolando Cabrera piloted DM La Jolla (Hiclass La Jolla-DM Bella Mia) to second for owner Sergio Jimenez and trainer Porfirio Fierro. DM La Jolla, a 5-year-old gelding, won the 2018 Delta Dash and TQHA 250 Stakes.
Heza Magic Coronas (Coronas Leaving You-Dee Magic Patriot) finished third for owner Jerry Deville Jr. and trainer Ned Goutierrez III. Everardo Rodriguez rode the 3-year-old gelding, who has won two races, with four seconds and two thirds in nine starts.
Jets Fast Dash (Jet Black Patriot-Skippie Fast Dash), Cosmo Lela (Cosmograph-Special Dashing Girl), Hot Prize (Fast Prize Dash-Hot Dare),
Blue Eyed Cartel (Sizzlin Cartel-The Louisiana Lassie), Rock Solid Babe Aw (Rock Solid Jess-McM Accent On Dash), Jess Adalida (Jess Louisiana Blue-Wortherweightingold) and Pieper (Down N Dash-Cant Bug This Game) completed the order of finish.
