MYSTICAL JESS
by John Moorehouse
Mystical Jess had come close several times in stakes, but she had never made it to the win- ner’s circle. That changed in the $25,000 Miss Sam
Houston Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on April 26, where she scored as the 11-10 favorite.
Ridden by Jesse Levario, Mystical Jess broke from the 3-post behind a couple of rivals. She quickly took over the lead, however, battling several others throughout the 330 yards. Mystical Jess stretched her winning margin to 1/2-length at the wire, completing the distance in :17.015 and posting an 89 speed index.
Josue Ponce trains the 4-year-old filly, who also ran second in the 2017 Retama Juvenile Challenge, 2018 Retama Derby Challenge and 2018 Lone Star Distaff Challenge, and third in 2019 Leverne Perry Memorial Stakes. Her earnings stand at $59,488.
Owner Juan Lozano Jr. bred Mystical Jess out of unraced Traffic Juana. The mare has produced 100% money earners from four starters. Mystical Jess is her first stakes winner and top money earner. Juana Mystica, the second dam, is multiple stakes winner and an earner of $179,648.
The Terrazas Family’s homebred Alinas War Princess (The Louisiana Cartel-Prairie War Princess) finished second under Francisco Mendez for trainer Arturo Terrazas III.
Betty and Bob Moore’s homebred Shake Em Rocks (Rock Solid Jess-Shake Em Fever) ran third with Alejandro Zuniga in the saddle for Roger Moore.
Completing the field were Classy Seis (Tres Seis- Cloned With Class), Gianni Moons U (One Famous Gianni-Chalinashake), Saved By Jesus JM (Prospect To The Top-Oh La Fleur), Runaway Heroine (Valiant Hero-Runaway Trs Seis), Shapeshifter (Mighty B Valiant-Strawflying Dina), First Lady Eleanor (Streakin Sixes-Third Copies Yours), and Lilac (FDD Dynasty-Gotcha Cartel).
Harris County Stakes
HAWKEYE
by Michael Compton
Hawkeye became a stakes winner for owner/ breeder Bobby Cox with an authoritative score in the $15,000 Harris County Stakes at Sam
Houston on April 20.
Ridden by Victor Urieta Jr., Hawkeye darted to
the front early in the 550-yard fixture. He dueled with Onefamousstreakinash before scampering clear of that rival late to run away with the race, crossing the finish 3 3/4-lengths to the good.
Hawkeye stopped the timer in :27.323, just ticks off Gray Invasion’s 2005 track record of :26.768. Hawkeye earned a speed index of 105 in the dominating effort for trainer Josue Ponce.
The son of World Champion One Dashing Eagle now boasts five career victories from 11 outings. The $9,000 winner’s share from his first stakes victory increased his earnings total to $177,835. Hawkeye won his trial and was a finalist in the 2017 All American Futurity-G1. He was also a finalist in the 2018 Rainbow Derby-G1, where he finished sixth but was placed fourth following a disqualification.
Cox bred the colt out of No Fees. She was undefeated in six starts, winning the TQHA Sale Futurity-G1, Miss Houston Stakes and Texas Juvenile Challenge.
Onefamousstreakinash (One Famous Brioni- Catchmysreakinash) offered game chase to finish second under Jose Martinez for owner Mary G. Thompson and trainer Leon Bard.

SINGLES CRUISE
by Tracy Gantz
Singles Cruise has taken an unusual route in her career. Bred in California, she began racing in Canada, where she won three stakes before returning to her native state where she recently added a stakes victory in the $20,000 James S. Smith Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos on April 7.
Ridden by Carlos Huerta, Singles Cruise broke in second and quickly took the lead. She thwarted oncoming rivals to eke out the win by a nose in :17.630 for 350 yards, posting a 94 speed index.
Paul Jones trains Singles Cruise for owners Barry and Janice Sather. Janice trained the filly in Canada, where last year Singles Cruise captured the Canada Cup Futurity-RG3, Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity, and Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge.
“She’s been a nice filly,” said Jones. “I’ve trained a few horses before for the Sathers. They’re really nice people, and they love their horses.”
Dr. Steve Burns bred Singles Cruise out of lightly raced Going Single. The mare has produced three winners from five starters, including additional stakes winner Snowboundbeast and stakes-placed Ivlis.
Valentin Zamudio owns and trains second-place Callender (Kiddy Up-Pie Maid). Ruben Lozano rode the colt, who ran third in last year’s California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes and in this year’s Dreaming Sweet Handicap.
Jones also trains Bos Time Machine (Bodacious Dash-One Prompt Chick), who finished in third place. Dee and Gary Hoovestal own Bos Time Machine, and Jesus Ayala rode the gelding.
