Adequan Mexico Derby Challenge
GULF COAST STREAKER
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With 10 runners bred in the United States, the Adequan Mexico Derby Challenge, a race under the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Challenge Program,
was run on July 1 at 400 yards for a purse of $599,855 pesos (approx. $30,199 US).
Rancho El Suspiro had the filly Marney
Jo and the sorrel colt One Danny, who were favorites due to their good performances on the track. Gulf Coast Streaker was second choice and also had consistent performances since his first season as a two year old.
In the first jumps, Cocoa Krash drifted in and interfered with One Danny, while Stel Fun started slow and drifted to the outside, leaving opportunity to the competition. Meanwhile, Gulf Coast Streaker took full advantage of his starting position (#9), from which he increased his margin at every opportunity.
He moved with freedom, always tending to the left but without interfering with his rivals, until reaching and passing Marney Jo, who ran very close to the inner rail, and staying a neck in front of her. This is how his second classic was credited in the current season, after
previously winning the Championship Dia Nacional del Charro and finishing second in the Easily A Possum and the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen (AMCCCCM) classics.
He reached the finish line in :19.46 (SI 98) under the energetic com- mand of the inspired rider José Manuel Cisneros, who thus won the third Clasico of the afternoon and sixth of the current season, leading the statis- tics in the scores of horse- men, like his speedy steed and his trainer, Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
Gulf Coast Streaker
(Rock Solid Jess-Ladys
Streaker, Streakin Six) was bred in the United States by Alan and Tawn Perkins and is owned by Cuadra Díaz de León. For this victory, he earned $275,933 pesos (approx. $13,892 US), with more than 1.45 million pesos in his earning’s account.
Marney Jo (Corona Cartel-Executive Looks) was awarded second place with his rider José Ángel Ambrosio Medina for owner Rancho El Suspiro and trainer Gerardo Rafael Galán Pérez. This was her second outing to the track; in her
debut she won the Maiden Stakes. Azoomin Jamie (Ivory James-
Azoomin With Jessie), owned
by Cuadra San Lázaro de Arará, finished third under Yair Daniel Báez Soto. She is trained by Rubén Romo Hernández. Her last victory in a classic was on March 18 in the Easily A Possum.

Boots RM), Cocoa Krash (Krash Cartel– Chocolate Port), Tarantism (Corona Cartel– Bristols Tango), Stel Fun (Stel Corona–Having Fun Yet), and Regal Eaglette (One Famous Eagle–Miss Royal Baby Doll).
