Turf Paradise Championship S.
WHISKEY
by Michael Compton
Whiskey gave owner Nadia Zavala a welcomed holiday gift on Dec. 23, notching his first career stakes victory in the $15,000 Turf Paradise Championship Stakes at Turf Paradise.
Ridden by Rodolfo Arvizu, Whiskey jumped out in front after a tardy break. Despite constant harassing from Downtown Richard through the lane, Whiskey led every step of the 440 yards and crossed the wire a head in front of Downtown Richard. Whiskey stopped the timer in :21.700 for trainer Ramon Fontes Jr.
Bred by Ariel Rodriguez of Phoenix, Arizona, Whiskey is now a winner in four of his nine career starts. The $8,835 winner’s share of the purse
lifted his lifetime earnings to $30,408. In October, Whiskey finished fourth as the 2-1 favorite in the Turf Paradise Championship Challenge-G3 but was awarded third-place money.
Whiskey is produced from the winning Splash Back mare Been Bad N Bac, who is also the dam of winner Corona Splash.
Second-place finisher Downtown Richard was piloted by Rick Oliver. Downtown Richard (Kelowna Kash-Ky High TB) is owned by Rigoberto Guillen and conditioned by Leonard Espinoza. Downtown Richard was sent off at odds of more than 11-1 in this race, despite being the third-highest earner in the field. Flying High Again and jockey David Reyes- Frisby held third. Owned by LEMA Racing Stables, Flying High Again (Azyoucansee-A One Girl Flight) is trained by Gilberto Hernandez.
Following the top three were Famous Photo (Famous Lane-Quick To De Photo TB), A Faster Streaker (Heza Fast Man-A Streakin Rose), JM Blue Light (FDD Dynasty-Windis Shyann), Check N Chick Out (Check Him Out-Navachic), Choose Fast (A Regal Choice-Let’s Eat Lunch TB), Vergelito Moon (Fast Moon Chic-Miss Special Tex), and Pistoli (Stoli-Bettor Cartel).
Orange Blossom Stakes
JOLTIN JESS
by Michael Compton
Glen Graff’s Joltin Jess took to the Florida sun- shine on Dec. 23, turning back seven rivals to take down top prize in the $22,250 Orange Blossom
Stakes at Hialeah Park.
With Shanley Jackson in the irons, Joltin Jess
led from start to finish and crossed the wire a neck in front of Doyles Dashing Star despite bearing out down the lane to register his initial stakes score. Joltin Jess covered the 550 yards in :27.211.
Bred in Oklahoma by Circle S Ranch, Inc., Joltin Jess just missed notching that first stakes win in his prior start, losing by only a nose over a muddy track in the All American Congress Maturity at Beulah Park. Conditioned in 2012 by Matt Frazier, Joltin Jess won two of three starts on the season. The $13,350 Orange Blossom first-place award boosted Joltin Jess’ bankroll to $117,336.
Joltin Jess is out of the graded stakes-placed Pine’s Easter Jet mare Jetting Home, a two-time winner during her racing career. In addition to Joltin Jess, Jetting Home has also produced the multiple Grade 1-placed mare Rarely Home, an earner of $65,093.
Orange Blossom runner-up Doyles Dashing Star is campaigned by Rachael Stephens Lessee. Trained by Gene Stephens, Doyles Dashing Star (Heza Fast Dash-Georgia Wildcat TB) was ridden by Raul Guitierrez. Third-place finisher Honor Me Good (With Honors-Miss Casady Lady), sent off as the race favorite, closed fastest of all to gain the show spot under Alex Baldillez Jr. for owner Rancho Los Dos Potrillos LLC and trainer Brandon Muniz.
Lord Azoom (Azoom-Lady Tenaya), Jess Cashin In (Mr Jess Perry-Feet Down First), Haulin Thunder (Streakin La Jolla-Sweet As Cash), Count Jesse Fast (Feature Mr Jess-Count The Colours) and Legendary Express (Ocean Runaway-Metered Express), who hesitated at the break and was never a factor, completed the order of finish.
Bienvenido De Nuevo
EXECUTIVE PRINCE
by Michael Compton
The $20,000 Bienvenido De Nuevo Stakes at Hialeah Park on Dec. 23 attracted a competitive field of nine, with the seasoned veterans battling over 350 yards. Freaking hit the wire a half-length in front of Executive Prince, but his victory was short-lived as the stewards disqualified the 6-year-old gelding for interference and placed him fourth, awarding the vic- tory to Executive Prince.
Ridden by Agustin Silva, Executive Prince covered the distance in :17.895 and earned a speed index of 88. Executive Prince picked up $12,000, growing his bankroll to $85,150. Bred in Texas by Scarlett Hill Farm Inc., Executive Prince is owned by Bennie and Teresa Jeter and trained by Judd Kearl. In 2012, Executive Prince won the Live Oak Handicap at Retama Park and also finished second in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes at Retama and the Classic Chevrolet Heartbeat of America Stakes at Lone Star Park.
Multiple stakes winner Sticky N Picky, the dam of Executive Prince, has produced eight winners with earnings of $427,531. In addition to Executive Prince, she is also represented by Executive Looks, a multiple stakes winner and Grade 1 winner of $277,891.
Second-place finisher Upgraded (Hotdoggin- Let Me Upgrade) was ridden by Sergio Ramirez for trainer Eddy Malagon and owner Antonio Saavedra. Dreamers Cartel (Corona Cartel-Dreams Can Fly) was moved to third for owner Brian Gunder and trainer Brian Muse. Josh Romero rode the filly.
Following the disqualification, Freaking (TR Dasher-Chickasis) , Jess A Runner (Jess Louisiana Blue-Katiebug Driver), Takin The High Road (Okey Dokey Dale-Take After Me), Waving At The Chicks (Wave Carver-Bay Or Gray Chick), Gold Rrrush (Corona Cartel-Jess A Lil Bit More), and Dashing Manner (Title Contender-Dot Dot And Dash) completed the order of finish.
