Mardi Gras Derby
FIVE BAR JESS CARTEL
by Michael Cusortelli
Fausto G. Mendoza’s Five Bar Jess Cartel, trained by Joel Huitron, earned his first stakes victory in the 400-yard $104,332 Mardi
Gras Derby for state-bred sophomores at Louisiana Downs on April 1.
Aided by a reported 10-mph tail wind, Five Bar Jess Cartel defeated PK Pure Rogue by 1-length in :19.540. The sorrel colt earned a 107 speed index and the $46,949 winner’s share of the purse.
Five Bar Jess Cartel won his March 11 trials and was the 2nd-fastest
qualifier from four Mardi
Gras Derby trials.
The colt was bred by Gerard Hebert, and he is
out of Jess Tempting To
Fly, a winning daughter
of Champion Tempting Dash. Five Bar Jess Cartel’s third dam, the winning Strawfly Special mare Allamericandreamgirl, was a finalist in Scrutinizer’s 2005 Hobbs America Derby at Zia

DEZIGNER JEANZ
by John Moorehouse
Dezigner Jeanz simply would not be denied in the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Juvenile. The two-year-old filly recovered
promptly from a contentious start to win by daylight in the $100,000 stakes, held April 22.
Trained by John Stinebaugh, Dezigner Jeanz was forced to the outside as she broke from the No. 6 gate. Jockey Francisco Calderon got the filly on course, and she was leading by 1/2-length as she entered the stretch. Dezigner Jeanz
pulled away during the final
yards, winning the race by a
full length.
Dezigner Jeanz finished her 330-yard trip in :16.836, logging an 89 speed index. That was nearly a second quicker than her maiden out of :16.925, her qualifying run for the Remington Park Futurity. The filly would have made the field for that lucrative $804,150 stakes
but was bumped out on the final trial of the night. She entered the Juvenile as the post- time favorite at odds of almost even money.
Pete Scarmardo owns Dezigner Jeanz, who is undefeated through her first two career outs. The $40,816 payday from this event improved the filly’s total bankroll to $49,654, already almost equaling the $55,000 Scarmardo paid for her in the 2022 Heritage Place Yearling Sale last September.
Bobby D. Cox bred Dezigner Jeanz out of winner All N The Jeans, who finished third in the 2010 Kindergarten Futurity-G1. She has produced 17 winners from 21 starters, including top earner All Pointz Bulletin, winner of last
year’s Oklahoma Derby-G3. Dezigner Jeanz is the mare’s second stakes winner.
Ernest (Big Lew- Louisiana Trail) finished
second by a head for owner Sam Green and trainer Guillermo Valdivia. Jesus Salazar was the jockey. The gelding has won or placed in all three of his starts.
She Looks Political (Apollitical Jess-She Looks Racy) hit the board in third place for Double A Ranch Inc. The Jorge Gonzalez trainee had jockey Rolando Raudales in the irons. The filly has placed third in all three of her starts.
The remaining order of finish was Jess A Rednec Cowboy (Flying Cowboy 123-Valiant Red Vixen), Mr Ripples (Tres Seis-Senorita Sweetness), Hope Hes Special (Special Effort- Honey Chick), JJ Fun N Jess (PYC Fun N Fancy-Jess Proved Youwrong), Injeanius (Favorite Cartel-All N The Jeans), and Mystic Paint (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess So Sixy). Park in New Mexico. The colt traces back to his fourth dam, Dashing Phoebe, a daughter of two-time World Champion Dash For Cash and the sport’s Champion 2-Year-Old Filly in 1985 and Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 1986.
Raced exclusively in Louisiana, Five Bar

A homebred colt, LRH Grant James (One Sweet Jess-LRH Heartofanoak) banked the third- place share of the purse for his owners Jetty and Donald Lemaire. Juan Francisco Garcia Jr. rode LRH Grant James for trainer Dwayne Breaux.
Jessabluesman (Jess Louisiana Blue- Cartels Beauty) finished fourth and was followed by Toast To Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Sante Mon Amie), fastest qualifier Hes A Fast Blood (Apollitical Blood-MCM Sheza Fast Cutie), JJ Freight Star (Freighttrain B-Jess A Little Star), Apollitical Sir (Apollitical Blood-Cartel Madame), Genuine Betrayal (Mr Piloto-Rubishoos) and Cole Train 2 (Freighttrain B-Histori).
$62,930 from nine outs and scored a neck victory in the $50,000 Louisiana QHBA Million Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Evangeline Downs on Dec. 17.
“He gave us some trouble as a 2 year old,” the trainer said. “We knew he was fast, but he could be difficult in the starting gate. Schooling him in the gates has made a big difference. We were really happy with his win today.”
