Selecta Auction Derby
ZE DANCER ARANDAS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With 35 participating three years old that were born in Mexico, four qualifying races were held on Aug. 12 for the finals of the 28th edition of the Selecta Auction Derby. Ze Dancer Arandas was the fastest qualifier with :19.551, followed by Z Real Perry and Super Tres Shiney with :19.727 and :19.740, respec- tively – times that were slow due to a flooded track.
Two weeks later the finals was contested by nine of the ten qualifiers due to the scratching of the filly Pantera Down Dash from Cuadra San Lázaro de Arará. Once again, they raced on a track altered by the excess of moisture, but officially considered as good.
Ze Dancer Arandas was widely preferred and was bet to win, closing with 0.60 odds due to the consistency he showed in the previous season and the current one.
The start was clean, with Fearless Kid (#1) assuming command for a few moments racing on the inner rail, while Ze Dancer Arandas (#3) drifted towards the center of the track, perhaps looking for firmer terrain. Once set- tled, José Manuel Cisneros pushed his mount towards the finish and took leadership of the group until crossing the wire almost 2-lengths in front of Super Tres Shiney, who started
from the extreme 8-gate and capture second place.
Ze Dancer Arandas accomplished his feat at 400 yards in :19.35 seconds for
a 101 speed index, equal to that which he obtained in the Mexico Derby.
In this race, he gave his
record a fourth stakes victory,
having previously credited the
Mexican Breeders Futurity,
the Mexico Derby and the
Anselmo Aguilar Payán Clasico. These achieve- ments were obtained in a total of 15 appear- ances, with 12 arrivals in first, one in second, and two thirds - always in the money.
The prize in dispute was $1,568,125 pesos (approximately $83,333 US), of which $658,612 pesos (approximately $35,000 US) went to Ze Dancer Arandas.
“The colt responded very well to the handling we gave him in the two weeks after his qualifying race, in which he was injured on his right front. This confirms that he is an excellent runner and we hope he will also be a stallion, just like his father,” said Epifanio Carrasco, his trainer who has taken him to
the aforementioned achieve- ments, along with rider José Manuel Cisneros and the entire Cuadra Hacienda Vieja team and owner.
Ze Dancer Arandas is
the son of the late stallion
Ze Dancer and out the mare Arandas Andy by Andy Sixes. Ze Dancer was an outstand- ing stallion and was owned by Hacienda Vieja, desig- nated Mexican Champion
by the AQHA; among his achievements was the Selecta Auction Derby in 2009, while in 2014 his son Chimpa Dancer repeated the feat. It should also be mentioned that the :19.35 reported by Ze Dancer Arandas is a record for this Derby.
In second place was Super Tres (Xplorador- First Shiney Native) with Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez in charge. The filly is owned by Orozco Racing and trained by René Alan Rodríguez García.
Third place went to the hard-working Fearless Kid (Fearless Fritz-Teller Jessie) with José Ángel Ambrosio Medina as rider for Cuadra El Roble and trainer Fidel Rosado
