Adams says he always gets nervous before any of his horses run, and he especially wanted this race to go well.
“I had some family there and a bunch of my friends,” said Adams. “I thought, ‘Oh please don’t let him get outrun in front of all these people.’ When you start getting too high on yourself and them, that’s exactly when it’s going to happen.”
Almost all horses eventually lose a race, but right now Signs Of Livewire looks like he has no intention of ever disappointing Adams or trainer Dee Keener.
It was a terrific race for Keener, who qualified four Paints to the final. Keener ended up running one-two with sons
of the top Paint sire CRM Livewire, as PFR Quickwire finished second for the ownership of Painted Faith Racing under jockey James Flores.
Keener debuted Signs Of Livewire in the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity trials, and the bay colt won both his trial and the final. He came back in his Speedhorse Graham trial to score by 3-lengths in the fastest qualifying time.
“That colt was paid up into the PSBA (the April 30 PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity) in between,” said Adams.
Keener recommended skipping the PSBA, which was fine with Adams, who hopes to run Signs Of Livewire for a couple more years.
Alexia Willis, who is also a barrel racer, bred Signs Of Livewire in Oklahoma. She posted a photo of the young colt with her small daughter on Facebook. Adams thought the photo was so cute and liked the colt so much
that he asked if Signs Of Livewire was for sale and they negotiated a price.
“I just started Paints about two years ago,” said Adams. “I ran a few last year. What truly made me want him so bad was his mother.”
Willis bred Signs Of Livewire in Oklahoma from the unraced Quarter Horse mare Signs Of PYC, a daughter of PYC Paint Your Wagon. Signs Of PYC has produced one additional starter, the winning Quarter Horse filly Signs Of A Blue Moon, and she
is a full sister to Champion The Fiscal Cliff and stakes winner Wagon Tales.
“Some of CRM Livewire’s best runners have come out of PYC Paint Your Wagon mares,” said Adams.
James Flores rode PFR Quickwire APHA (CRM Livewire-Quick Caydee) to second for Painted Faith Racing and Keener. The gelding also finished second to Signs Of Livewire in their trial. PFR Quickwire had run first in two of his three starts prior to that, though he had been disqualified and placed eighth for causing interference at the start of a trial.
Benjamin Frausto’s homebred BF Hannas Wagon APHA (Lil Kool Wagon QH-Hannas Treasure) finished third. Mario Delgado rode the gelding for trainer Guillermo Valdivia. BF Hannas Wagon won a maiden race and finished second in his trial.
Completing the field were Livewires Turnpike APHA (CRM Livewire-Wagon On Turnpike), Turnpikers Eagle APHA (One Fabulous Eagle QH-Paint Me Turnpike),
RP Dirty Barracuda APHA (Barracuda-RP Eye N Colours), PFR Corona N Lime
APHA (Coronas Leaving You QH-PHQ Princes Stef), Electric Tales APHA (Wagon Tales QH-Sparketta), Salt Wire APHA (CRM Livewire-Fantastic Follies), and
Wl You Aint No Cowboy APHA (Painted Turnpike-Texas Fourwinds).
