margin of a head was deceptively small, as Whizkey Glasses was easily the best. He stopped the timer in :19.896.
Even Akurit’s restlessness in the gate in the rail spot didn’t affect Whizkey Glasses’ performance.
“The #1 horse was acting up, and it got my horse a little unsettled,” Calderon stated. “The header did a great job of getting us settled down. Three steps out of the gate and we were gone.”
Calderon led all jockeys at the Remington meet, while Dunn Ranch had 13 wins to become the leading owner for the second consecutive season.
“I want to thank the team for this, from the grooms to the trainers to the ranch hands,” said Matt. “A lot goes into this. It’s an honor to accept this award.”
Initially, the Dunns wanted to keep Whizkey Glasses a colt, but the sometimes difficult youngster developed into a professional racehorse after being gelded.
Monty Arrossa has trained Whizkey Glasses throughout his career, which has included wins in the 2021 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and Easy Jet Stakes-G3. With the Heritage Place Derby, Whizkey Glasses has earned $927,813, and the Dunns hope he can become a millionaire soon.
“He’s a super classy horse,” said Bendi. “He just handles everything so well. He stays calm, gets to the gates, and does his job. He’s been an awesome horse.”
Bendi likes to use country western songs for many Dunn Ranch runners. Whizkey Glasses is named for “Whiskey Glasses” by Morgan Wallen.
This was the second Heritage Place Derby for the Dunns, who also won it in 2019 with Apollitical Pence. Winner of the 2020-2021 Champion of Champions-G1, Apollitical Pence has been getting some well-deserved R&R since scoring in the Feb. 20 Brad McKinzie Winter Championship-G1.
“We’ve just had him back at the ranch, giving him some time off,” said Bendi. “He’s a super-sound horse. He’ll start back in training again soon.”
The goal is for Apollitical Pence to return to Los Alamitos to try for a third Champion of Champions.
The Dunns bred Whizkey Glasses in Oklahoma from Marys Southernpolicy, who has produced 15 winners from 17 starters, including stakes winners BP Cartels Policy, BP First Class, and Southern Wagon. The mare’s winners also include stakes-placed BP Coronas Policy, BP Tac Marys Policy, Mary Paintyourwagon, Americas Dynasty, and Southern Sunshine. Marys Southernpolicy is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Southern Cartel, CC Policy, and Southern Dashing Val.
Marys Southernpolicy produced a full sister to Whizkey Glasses this year, and Bendi is contemplating Whizkey Girl for the filly’s name.
Justine Klaiber rode B Leaving (Valiant Hero- Jess B Mighty) to second for trainer Eddie D. Willis and owner WW Partners. Fastest-qualifier Dreamsville (Hes Relentless-Answer The Dream) finished third for jockey Jesus Salazar, trainer Dee Keener, and owner Elizabeth Logan.
Completing the field were Iza Good Guy (Jess Good Candy-Iza Doll Face), Delight Us
All (Corona Cartel-Our Genuine Delight), Cell Bounce (Corona Cartel-My Famous Lady), Jess The Leader (Jess Louisiana Blue-Cartel Leader), Lethal Viper (Volcom-Miss Lethal), Apollitical J Streak (Apollitical Jess-Streak Of Sixes), and Akurit (First Down Dash-Celtic Emblem).
