ORBYSON
Oby Tracy Gantz
rbyson had a little trouble at the start of
the June 4 Sam Houston Juvenile. But he overcame any disadvantage to win the 330-yard consolation for the Sam Houston Futurity-G3.
Making his first lifetime start in the May 13 trials, Orbyson won impressively by 2 1/2-lengths. He went favored in the Juvenile, breaking from post 6 under jockey Jose Herbert. At the start, Orbyson hopped in the air and bumped with the horse to his inside. He recovered well to power home by a neck in :17.090.
Juan Diaz Jr. trains Orbyson for TYKRH Racing, which purchased the gelding from breeder Bobby Cox for $50,000 at the 2021 Texas Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale.
Cox bred Orbyson in Texas from his winning homebred mare Shazumba, the dam of four
winners from six starters, including graded stakes winner Expedyte. The second dam, 2004 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 winner All About Ease, has also produced Grade 1 winners Chazaq and Zoomin With Ease, and Grade 3 stakes winner All About Torque.
Jose Camacho trains second-place Tic It To The Dance (Mr Jess Perry-Double Down Darling) and owns and trains third-place Gone Grand (FDD Going Grand-Trashy Tres). Luis Vivanco rode Tic It To The Dance for owner Joe Ruiz Jr., while Eliazar Vera piloted Gone Grand. Both horses made their racing debuts in the Futurity trials, with Tic It
To The Dance winning his trial and Gone Grand running second in his.
Completing the field were Eyeing A Goodtime (Duponte-Miss Wide Open), Lil Kevin (KVN Corona-Valiant Strawfly), Feature Five Bar (Five Bar Cartel-Defining Difference), Irish Vamoose (Big Lew-Fast Red Rose), Sygnyfycant Impact (Ivory James-Jess Significant), Lady Valiant (Valiant Hero- Financial Leverage), and Valiant Lancer (Valiant Hero-Race Princess).
Leon Bard Stakes
THE CARTELS CADILLAC
Tby John Moorehouse
he Cartels Cadillac scored his first stakes win,
taking the $54,500 Leon Bard Memorial by a 1/2-length on June 4 at Sam Houston Race Park.
The race was held in honor of Leon Bard, a longtime horseman and trainer in Texas who passed away in January. Bard’s daughters, Shelly Burnett and Caryl Merchant, made the presentation to the winning connections: owner Josefina Guzman, trainer Juan Diaz Jr., and jockey Victor Urieta Jr.
In his previous out, The Cartels Cadillac finished
a distant eighth in his qualifying run for the Sam Houston Derby. He was sharper this time, dueling with Hes No Ilusion for most of the 350 yards before gaining some breathing room during the stretch. The gelding made his run in :17.825 to clock a 91 speed index.
A three-year-old gelding, The Cartels Cadillac already had black type, finishing second in last year’s running of the Oklahoma Juvenile. The gelding scored his second win in nine overall starts, and the $32,700 payday nearly doubled his prior earnings to a new total of $65,714.
Jerry D. Chapman bred The Cartels Cadillac out of lightly raced Louisiana Cadillac.
Hes No Ilusion (The Louisiana Cartel-Jess An Illusion) finished second by a neck for Jerry Windham. Trained by Lewis “Tooter” Jordan, the gelding had Claudio Aguilar aboard. Rock Solid Stones (Rock Solid Jess-Precious Serendipity) placed third. The gelding is owned by Sarah Huskey, trained by Esteban Rubio and had Francisco Giles in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was DM Moonpie (Moonin The Eagle-DM Bella Mia), Doc McCrocklin (Dash Master Jess-Pink Cartel), Mo Delirio (Desirio-Mo Anita Cartel), Muddy Misfit (Muddy Watters-Zooming Separatist), JB Shiner Bok (Boknaai-Streakin N Dancin) and Mr Teco (Man Who Wouldbe King-My Cold Corona). Panhandle Dynasty scratched.
Texas Twister Stakes
EL TARTANERO JESS
Tby John Moorehouse
he 110-yard distance suited El Tartanero Jess
quite well. The four-year-old colt won the $55,000 Texas Twister Stakes in his debut at that distance, part of the June 4 card at Sam Houston Race Park.
El Tartanero Jess got to the winner’s circle for the fifth time in his 10-race career—with four consecutive victories now—and collected his first triumph in stakes company. It also marked his stakes debut.
The $33,000 payday from the event improved his total bankroll to $87,468.
Eleazar Martinez Sr. owns El Tartanero Jess, and now has won this race three times. Raul Galvan is the trainer and Ali Rivera did the riding.
Eleazar Martinez bred El Tartanero Jess out of Darling Corona, a 2013 mare.
Also making her debut at 110 yards, Jess A Dashin Angela (Dash Master Jess-Mi Angela) closed well to snatch second place for owner Cesar Rosales. Winner of last year’s TQHA 250 Stakes, the Inez Delacruz trainee had Ricardo Garcia-Cruz in the irons.
Sheza Freighttrain T (Freighttrain B-Cloning Around), the post-time favorite at even-money odds, finished third for owner Patrick Richardson and trainer Charles Shults. Bryan Candanosa
rode Sheza Freighttrain T, winner of this year’s Mothers Day Stakes at Delta Downs and last year’s version of the Lassie Futurity-G2.Perry Mouse Tale (Paint Me Perry-FMJ Mouse Tale) was fourth, Jeg Apolliteal Seis (Apollitical Jess-Trace Seis) fifth and Mighty Pocket Rocket (Mighty Corona-Raise the Sky) sixth. In a dead-heat for 7th were Johnny De Capo (Capo De Capi-Dash For Ted) & Railroad Jimmy (Freighttrain B-Ha Chi Mama), followed by Top Notch (Apollitical Blood-RMR Baby Doll) and Lucky Dice (One Sweet Jess-Fodice).
