Battling a 25 mph crosswind and still running a 103 speed index is impressive, indeed. That’s what
Mals First Down accomplished in the Bank Of America Evergreen Park Championship Challenge at Grande Prairie on Aug 26.
The gelding stepped away from the 5-gate on top and led the field throughout for a wire-to-wire win. Jockey Scott Sterr is very familiar with Mals First Down and rode hard all the way to the wire stop- ping the clock at :21.825.
Mals First Down now boasts
a race record 9(2)-8(1)-4 from 31 outs. He has won his last two in a row. This race was worth a total of
$27,901 and with first place money of $13,950, he now has a total bankroll of $66,632.
The gelding’s connections include veteran conditioner William Leech and owners Charlie Weaselhead and Jim Plum.
Mals First Down was bred by Bill T. Robbins out of winner First A Princess. She has produced 100% earners from eight starters, including Grade 3 placed First Down Zoom. Mals First Down
is her first stakes winner and top earner, also winning the 2016 Old Timers classic.
Honor The Aztec (Honor The Perry-Aztec Skyy) ran a stellar race,
finishing hard to pocket the second place check. He is owned/trained by Tom Kenway. Martin Ortiz was in the irons.
Cruisinfourabruisin (First Timber-Tagulator) finished in third place. The gelding is owned by Barry and Janice Sather and
is also trained by Janice Sather. Alejandro Hernandez was han- dling the reins.
Go Jessin Beaver (Apollitical Jess-Corona Del Valle), ER Cafe (Tres Seis-Hawks Halo), Living Is Sweet (One Sweet Jess-Excessive Living TB) completed the order of finish. Experimental Rocket was scratched.
