Jose Rocha rode Munckin to the gelding’s first stakes victory in the $20,141 Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby at Northlands Park on Aug. 19.
Trained by Buckey Stockwell for owner WestWind Oilfield Services of Fillmore, Saskatchewan, and aided by a reported 10-mph tail wind, Munckin went 330 yards in :17.149 while posting an 88 speed index.
Munckin broke well from the eight-hole and was still in that posi- tion at the first call. The gelding dug in and pushed past his rivals, taking third-place by the top of the stretch. It was an all out run as he took the lead as the finish line approached and scored a head victory.
The $9,155 winner’s share of the Alberta Stallion Stakes purse pushed the sorrel son of Special Fly Bye’s bankroll to $23,200.
Munckin has now won three races, and his race record is 3(1)-2- 4(1) from 14 starts, all in Canada.
His resume includes a third-place
finish in last year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity at Northlands Park and a fourth-place finish in that year’s Sport Of Speed Stakes at Lethbridge.
Munckin was bred by William Leech of Stirling, Alberta. The geld- ing is one of four winners from five starters produced by stakes win-
ner Cleats Rockette, who was the 2002 Canada Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly. Cleats Rockette has produced 100% earners from five starters, including stakes winner/top earner Sheaintawhiskylulaby. The second dam, Timely Rockette, ran third
in the 1994 All American Congress Derby at Beulah Park.
Bringit Like Benny (Promised Class-Keep On Keepin On) rallied, but was out-finished and took second place under Juan Gonzalez for owners Barry and Janice Sather. The geld- ing is conditioned by Janice Sather. Bringit Like Benny was a finalist in two futurities as a freshman.
Pros Ranger (Promised Class- Baileys On Ice) ran third for owner and trainer Donalda Cochrane. Freddy Fuentes had the riding assign- ment. The gelding is a stakes finalist.
Completing the field were Make Er Out (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker), League Of Ivory Bugs (Ivory League-Paulina Bug), O First Flash (First Timber-Roco
On The Run), Ivory Lady League (Ivory League-Rocky Mountain Lady), Reds On Fire (Sizzlin Red Corona-Queens Strawfly) & Brooksbubblincerveza (Sizzlin Red Corona-A Regal Purpose) who was DQ’d from 5th to 9th for interfer- ence.
