only five horses were tough enough to enter the $17,462 Merial Evergreen Park Distaff
Challenge at Grande Prairie on Aug. 26.
The toughest of the tough was Toughie. The 4-year-old filly broke from the inside post on top. The results were never in doubt as she increased her lead until she hit the wire 1 1/4-lengths to the good, stopping the timer at :19.715 to earn a 96 speed index.
Toughie seems to have her groove on and has won her last three in
a row and, coincidentally, Freddy Fuentes has been aboard for all three. The first place money of
$9,080 increased the filly’s bankroll to $151,915. Toughie now has a race record of 11(4)-1-1(1) from 15 starts. Her wins include the 2015 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity-RG3 at Lethbridge, 2016 Evergreen Park Derby Challenge at Grand Prairie and the 2016 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby at Lethbridge.
Her connections include owner Charles G. Stojan and trainer William H. Leech.
Toughie was bred in California by Edward C. Allred out of 2-time winner Hard Lining. She has produced 100% winners from
four starters, including top earner Unchangeable. The gelding won
the 2015 Cypress Handicap and finished second in the 2013 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, both run at Los Alamitos.
Splashy Mamacita (Volcom- Splashy Pizazzy) finished second for owners Barry and Janice Sather, who also trains the filly. Alejandro Hernandez was up. Northfork Sizzle (Sizzlin Red Corona-RJ Bitterroot Babe) finished third for owner Glenn K. Willis and trainer William Leech. Scott Sterr was handling the reins.
First Prize Sass (First Timber Oak-Sass N Dass) finished fourth and was followed by Quad Seis (Tres Seis-Corona On A Jet).
