John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge
TeLL oF The PAST
by Tracy Gantz
The mare A Delightful Legacy is well named. Not only has she produced newly crowned stakes winner Tell Of The Past, that gelding is part of the legacy the late Kim Kessinger has left to his wife, Lila, and the Quarter Horse racing industry.
Lila Kessinger represented her husband at Los Alamitos on Aug. 25, when Tell Of The Past, racing in the name of Kim Kessinger’s estate, captured the John
Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile
Challenge. Kessinger died
this past April.
“I wasn’t going to miss this for anything,” said Lila. “Kim really loved his horses, and he loved the many friends that he made along the way.”
Tell Of The Past jumped out on top and always looked strong. With Saul Ramirez Jr. riding confidently, the
gelding led throughout the 350 yards and came to the wire three-quarters of a length
the best in :17.495. The victory earned him a berth in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship on Oct. 27 at Prairie Meadows.
Joe Bassett trains Tell Of The Past, who was winning his first race in the Juvenile Challenge. Third in his initial outing on July 20, the gelding finished second in his
Challenge trial and went off as the 8-5 favorite in the final.
The Eaves Horses Family Ltd. Partnership bred Tell
Of The Past in Texas. His dam, A Delightful Legacy, won the 2003 All American Juvenile-RG3 and is a half-sis- ter to Champions A Delightful Dasher and Hes My Dasher. The mare’s seven winners from 12 starters include Champion Inseperable, winner of the 2009 Rainbow Derby-G1 and
All American Derby-G1, plus stakes-placed Jess Before Dawn and Teller No Lies. The second dam is Champion Broodmare Fortune Of Delight, a half-sister to Champions Tres Seis and Dean Miracle.
All Out Arrogant (FDD Dynasty-Oh So Arrogant), ridden by Eduardo Nicasio, finished second by a neck over Bingo (Tres Seis-Corona Blurr), with Alex Bautista in the saddle. Cody Joiner trains All Out Arrogant for Ron Martin and Randall Dees, while Felix Gonzalez condi- tions Bingo for Salvador Pimienta. Completing the field were Eagle Nation (Stoli-BSR Crash), Heza Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Da One), Mokara (Ivory James- Brimmertons Chick), Jessa Secret (Dejon- Secret Return), and Joy Roses Eagle SA (One Famous Eagle-Gather The Roses). Ill Be A Dasher and Jabuti Eagle SA were scratched.

It should come as no surprise that Tres Of Linda would win a stakes at Los Alamitos. Her sire, Tres Seis, captured the 2001 Golden
State Futurity-G1 there, while her dam, Lindas Dasher, made a career out of stringing together stakes wins and placings at the Southern California track.
Under jockey Rodrigo Aceves, 8-5 second
Anna Singletary unveiled Tres Of Linda at Los Alamitos last September, and the filly broke her maiden in her first try. She won or placed in all of her subsequent starts except for the March 25 James Smith Handicap, in which she was bumped and finished sixth. Tres Of Linda won her Derby Challenge trial by 2 1/2 lengths as the fastest qualifier.
The Singletarys raced Lindas Dasher, who earned $331,703, won the
2005 Huntington Beach Handicap, and placed in six other stakes. A half-sister to stakes-placed This Dash Flys, Lindas Dasher is from the family of Champion Lady Juno. Tres Of Linda is one of three winners from four start- ers for Lindas Dasher.
Steve Burns’ homebred Attack The Cartel (Corona Cartel-Separate Tac) finished second with Oscar Peinado
aboard. The filly, trained Mike Casselman, had won one race and finished second once in her five previous starts.
Gregorio Arriago brought Whata Corona Runner (Corona Cartel-AB What A Runner) home in third for owner-breeders Dennie and Kris Hill and trainer Bret Vickery. Last year, Whata Corona Runner finished second in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes.
Completing the field were Jess Dapper (Feature Mr Jess-PJ Flying Phoebe), Tellers First Affair (Teller Cartel-Fancys First Affair), What A Doll SR (Hawkinson-Splashy Brooke), Lil Sharky (Dean Miracle-Ms Corona Jet), Veyron (Ivory James-Leading Diva), and
A Mere Dynasty (Feature Mr Jess-A Mere Classic). A First Down Snow (First Down Dash-Springtime Snow) lost the rider midway through the race.
choice Tres Of Linda went while the odds-on favorite, A Mere Dynasty, hopped in the gate and got away slowly. Attack The Cartel unsuccessfully tried to match strides with Tres Of Linda, who pulled away to win by a length in :19.826. That earned her a berth
in the Oct. 27 Adequan Derby Challenge at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.
