It’s been a little more than a year since long- time trainer Eusevio Huitron passed away. His son, Adrian Huitron, and the rest of the family
have continued to carry on what Eusevio started—and Adrian scored a big win when his trainee Chilitos won the $344,050 Dash For Cash Futurity-G2 at Lone Star Park on Oct. 5.
“We knew it would be tough to keep the momentum going,” Adrian said about the
loss of Eusevio. “He was the master. When he passed, we stumbled. We’re still maintaining his legacy. It’s been working out for us this year.”
Indeed. Through Oct. 9, Adrian Huitron has saddled 33 winners this year, including Relentless Dynasty, who surprised as a longshot to win the TQHA Sale Futurity this past sum- mer at Retama Park.
Chilitos didn’t have such an underdog sta- tus. The two-year-old colt came into the Dash For Cash Futurity sporting the fastest qualify- ing time from the Sept. 21 trials as well as previously qualifying for the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-G1.
Huitron noted that Chilitos has been in their stable since he was a yearling.
“We broke him and got him ready for rac- ing. He showed his potential [and] showed he was really smart,” he said. “He didn’t give us any trouble at all.”
What Huitron noticed, however, was that Chilitos was not great at making the break. The hope was that the colt would hit his stride in the latter portion of the year, when there were races at lon- ger distances available. Races like the 400-yard Grade 2 Dash For Cash Futurity.
“Our horse is not great at breaking fast,” Huitron said. “But once he gets on going, he’s pretty tough to beat.”
The Dash For Cash Futurity-G2 followed that script. Chilitos didn’t break on top, but moved into the lead by a head as he entered the stretch. The colt held on from there, winning by a neck and finishing the race in :19.700, posting a 98 speed index. Nestor Duran drew the riding assignment.
Chilitos’ stakes-winning effort was slightly quicker than his performance in the trials, a :19.769 run.
Now holding three wins in six lifetime starts, Chilitos brought in a $137,620 payday for owners Anna and Omar Paredes, signifi- cantly increasing his career earnings to the cusp of $200,000 at $194,219.
“We knew it would be a tough battle,” Huitron said. “He had the potential, but we knew it’d be a tough race.”
Omar Paredes bred Chilitos out of New Track Record setter Mary Me Anna, dam of 100% money earners from two starters. Chilitos is her first stakes winner.
Chilitos is set to run in the Texas Classic Futurity in November, assuming a clean
bill of health coming out of this event. That could be another chance for Adrian to keep following
in his father’s footsteps. “We’ll just continue to do our best to build on his legacy,” he said.
