WHY BUY THE COW
by Danny Camp
Any time a horse can circle the field around the turn, he is truly the fastest on that day. That’s exactly what Why Buy The Cow did in the $145,000 New Mexico Classic Cup 870 Championship at Zia Park on Oct. 27.
Why Buy The Cow had his work cut out for him. He broke from the 7-post under Luis Rodriguez and was four wide around the turn. When he hit the top of the
stretch, he hustled to the front
and crossed the wire with an
impressive 2 1/2-lengths lead.
Trained by Simon Buechler, the gelding completed the 870 yards in :46.138 to earn a 92 speed index. He also earned first place money worth $87,000, which ups his total earnings to $112,261 for owner Carrol Durbin. He now has a race record of three wins out of ten races.

HH C J SHAKE

HH C J Shake topped the qualifying ladder for the Miss Roxie Little Futurity, then proved to be the fastest in the field for the stakes
final, winning the $182,400 event by a head at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino on Oct. 26.
A 2-1 betting favorite at post time, HH C J Shake broke well from the 3-post underneath Juan Marquez and surged at the start, promptly grabbing the lead and running in front by a 1/2-length at the first call.
He maintained that separa- tion going into the stretch, then held off a late bid by Beach Benny to hit the wire first by a head.
Paul Martin trains HH C J Shake, who finished the race in :17.873 and clocked an 88 speed index. The two- year-old gelding is owned
by the partnership of Larry Carter, John Myers, Gary Brandon Bell and Rusty

Mike Weatherly bred Why Buy The Cow out of winner Southwest Treasure. She has produced six winners from seven starters. Why Buy The Cow is her first stakes winner.
“Carrol Durbin bought this horse out of the Weatherly internet sale in July,” said Buechler. “We were sure glad Carrol left this horse with us. We always thought 870 would be his best
lick. He didn’t break the best, but he made up for it down the lane. He’s kind and quiet in the barn area.
“When he steps on the track he gets a little excited but nothing out of line,” he continued. “We are now look- ing forward to 870 races at Sunland Park.”
D E Wagons Strawfly (Genuine Strawfly-Wagons Maiden) finished second under Duane Sterling for owner Betty Marshall and
trainer Richard Sedillo. The gelding has won the Zia 870 Championship and Challenger Six Handicap.
Regards Miracle (Chicks Regard-Old Lady Mitchell) and jockey Adrian Ramos made up enough ground to capture third place money. He is owned by Joe Dee Brooks, Ted Rushing, Scott Bryant and Lee Lewis. Michael Joiner was in charge of condition- ing. The gelding won last year’s New Mexico Classic Cup 870 Championship.
Amsterdams Big Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Amsterdam), Dan The Flashman (First Moonflash-Domeinitchy TB), DM Nate Dog (Gonna Ro Sham Bo-Kat Kora) and El Chirrionero (Heza Motor Scooter- Red Tomacita) completed the order of fin- ish. “To win three in a row is great but to win four in a row is really something to dream about,” Martin said following the race to Stallionesearch.
com. “It is extremely satisfying to see him win in a race like that. There are a lot of really talented horses in that group.”
