FLASH AND ROLL
by Tracy Gantz
Never before had a horse captured the Golden State Million Futurity, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, and Los Alamitos Super
Derby, all Grade 1 events at Los Alamitos. Flash And Roll came into the Los Alamitos
Super Derby with a wire-to-wire win in the Golden State Million Futurity-G1, and another wire- to-wire finish in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 last year as part of a 6-race win streak.
Flash And Roll qualified to the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 on Oct. 19, going gate-to-wire in her trial for the fastest qualify- ing time heading into the finals.
The filly needed to defeat the super-tough Powerful Favorite to complete her task in the $1,009,650 Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 on Nov. 10, and she never wavered.
The Los Alamitos Super Derby began with a perfect start for Flash And Roll, the 3-2 sec- ond choice to Powerful Favorite at even money.
“I got away from the gate like a rocket,” said Cody Jensen, who first rode Flash And Roll in the trials and was aboard for the finals.
“As good as I got away, I thought I’d get the jump on everybody,” Jensen contin- ued. “We hit the ground that first time, and Powerful Favorite was right
with me, maybe a head or
half-a-neck behind me. The
race was on - it was a dogfight
from the first jump. Those
two extremely good three
year olds just hooked up and
ripped down through there.”
Flash And Roll and Powerful Favorite battled throughout the 400 yards, though Flash And Roll never let the gelding stick his head in front of her.
The brown filly scored by
a neck in :19.516, posting a 99 speed index.
“That was the first time she’s really been
in a dogfight,” Jensen added. “I was very impressed at how she handled herself and really dug in and did what it takes to get there first.”
Justin Joiner trains Flash And Roll for owner Scott Bryant. In addition to her triplet of Grade 1 Los Alamitos races, Flash And
Roll was voted last year’s Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. She qualified to this year’s All American Derby-G1, but ran unplaced after a rough trip.
With the $424,053 winner’s share from Los Alamitos Super Derby,
she raised her earnings to $1,689,718. Her race record is now 10(3)-0-0 from 13 starts. Beside being a finalist in the All American Derby, Flash And Roll was also a
finalist in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
“I’m just glad this filly has come back the
way she has,” stated Joiner. “They really put up a pretty good horse race today. I was wonder- ing if that horse was going to close in on us,
