but she seemed to get another gear down here and did her job. I’m sure glad she finished.
“In the All American Derby, she actually got away really well,” the trainer continued. “She got bumped around good. One of the horses got disqualified. She took it pretty hard.
“The first couple of weeks down here,
I was just trying to put her back together
and really hoping that it did not affect her mentally. Sometimes a change of environment really helps.”
Joiner joked that maybe Flash And Roll likes the California beaches, and indeed the filly has never lost at Los Alamitos. But the trainer also paid tribute to Jensen.
“Cody is one of the best finishing riders that I’ve ever seen,” the trainer said. “He gets them away from the gate so well, and he’s really quiet on top of a horse. She likes that. He didn’t panic at the end - he just rode her. She responded. It’s always tough to go up against seasoned horses, and out here I call them extremely seasoned.”
Julianna Hawn Holt bred Flash And Roll in California, and consigned her to the 2017 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Bryant bought the filly for $200,000.
Flash And Roll is out of the 2009 Champion Aged Mare Stylish Jess BR, a multiple Grade 1 winner at Los Alamitos and
an earner of $804,298. Stylish Jess BR has produced four winners from seven starters, including stakes-placed Jess Secrets BR. Flash And Roll is the top money earner in the brood as well as the first stakes winner.

place Powerful Favorite (Favorite Cartel- Remember Me Rose), ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for owner Rosenthal Ranch LLC. Powerful Favorite won last year’s Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2 and this year’s Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, El Primero
Del Ano Derby-G3, and Governor’s Cup Derby-RG3.
Dunn Ranch owns third-place finisher Apollitical Pence (Apollitical Jess-Send City) and bred the gelding with Womack Cavender Farms. Jesus Ayala was aboard for trainer Monty Arrossa. Apollitical Pence won this year’s Heritage Place Derby-G3.
Corona By Corona (Corona Cartel- Louisana Corona) finished fourth and was followed by Red Hawk Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Red Hawk Chick), Dexxter (Corona Cartel-Tres Of Linda), Ali Babe Foose (Foose-Babe On The Fly), Bail Czech (Corona Czech-Letty Bail Regis Out) and Symbol Of Faith (Tac It Like A Man- Answer The Dream). Especially Tres PYC was scratched.
