                Races And Aces Stakes
RACING KANE
by Danny Camp
Racing Kane took home his first stakes win in the $30,000 Races And Aces Stakes at Evangeline Downs on Nov. 2.
The gelding shot from the number 2-post on
the lead. He still had the lead at the first call, but let it briefly slip away as the field rounded the turn. Under the guidance of jockey Juan Torres, how-
ever, Racing Kane made a charge down the stretch and kicked clear, crossing the wire 1 3/4-length in front of his competitors.
Saddled by trainer Brenda Foster, Racing Kane completed the 870 yards in :46.479, earning an 89 speed index.
The $18,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total lifetime earnings to $86,133. Owned by Jesus Coronado, the gelding has now won seven races from 26 starts with 7 firsts, 4 seconds and 6 third place finishes.
Racing exclusively in Louisiana, Racing Kane was making his first appearance in a stakes event since 2016 when he finished fourth in the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Invitational Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Prior to his victory in the Races And Aces Stakes, Racing Kane had run in a series of 18 consecutive claiming events dating back from May of 2017.
Janelle Simon bred Racing Kane out of two- time winner Ms Janas Perry, who was also a finalist in the 2004 Sunset 550 Stakes at Evangeline Downs. The mare has produced four winners
from five starters, including Jetz A Streakin, who was a finalist in the Louisiana Champions Day Derby-RG2. Racing Kane is her first stakes winner as well as her top money earner.
Going To Hollywood (Heza Fast Dash-Alcea TB) made a great run up the lane under Donald Watson for owner/trainer Matt Frazier for second. This was the gelding’s first attempt in stakes company, although he did run in a trial to the 2016 Lee Berwick Futurity in his first out. In his first attempt in a stakes event, Struttintofame (Struttin To Beduino-YB Crown Me Now) had the lead around the turn and held on to pocket third place money for owner Jerry Deville. The Ned Goutierrez III trainee had Antonio Alberto in the irons. Followed by Freakin Patriot Dash (Game Patriot-Freakin Dash) Hollyhook (Game Patriot- Hollyhocks TB) FDD Aufluential (FDD Going Grand-Aufluential TB) JW Losin Control (Strong Hope-Ew Comment).
Scoopies Leaving You Stakes
CANT CATCHACORONA
by John Moorehouse
Even-money favorite Cant Catchacorona sprinted to his second straight stakes win on Dec. 7, pre- vailing in the $30,000 Scoopies Leaving You Stakes
at Evangeline Downs.
Trained by Kenneth Roberts Sr., Cant
Catchacorona broke on top from the 6-hole and ran in front for the entirety of the 220 yards, hitting
the wire first with a 1/2-length margin. Everardo Rodriguez was aboard as the gelding finished his trip in :11.688, registering a 99 speed index. The win produced an $18,000 payday that improved the geld- ing’s total earnings to $123,731.
TM Ranch owns the four-year-old gray gelding, who now holds six wins in 17 career starts. Cant Catchacorona came into this race on a high after taking the Opelousas Stakes-RG2 one month earlier at Evangeline for his first stakes victory. The gelding had competed in four prior stakes events before win- ning the Opelousas Stakes on Nov. 9.
Jim and Natalie Montgomery bred Cant Catchacorona out of In The Open, a lightly-raced 2005 mare. Cant Catchacorona is a full brother to 2015 Champion Aged Stallion Open Me A Corona.
The Cazador (Sir Runaway Dash-Told Ya), a multiple stakes winner, closed fast but finished second for owner Rayne Knight. The Michael Zingelmann trainee had John Hamilton in the irons. JJ Chris S Angel (Jet Black Patriot-JJ Special Tree)
hit the board in third. The filly is owned by Roberto Morales, trained by Santiago Riojas, Jr. who had Ricardo Hernandez Jr., aboard. Corona Down Perry (Coronas Leaving You-Second Down Perry), Flamin Hot Fortune (Jet Black Patriot-Toast To Fortune), Cajun Cos (Tee Cos-JLS Crawfish Pie), High And Caliente (Whathaveigottado-High On Sissy High), Hot Prize (Fast Prize Dash-Hot Dare) and Logans Fast Dasher (Heza Fast Dash-Logans Game) completed the finishing order. Jets Fast Dash was scratched.
Sams Town Stakes
FIRST N SASSY
by Danny Camp
When the dust settled, First N Sassy was in first place in the Sams Town Stakes, a 350-yard event worth $25,000 for three-year-olds and up held at Evangeline Downs on Dec. 14.
The ground broke out from underneath the filly when she exited the 8-post, but that didn’t slow her down much. She got the second call from the gate and then led the remainder of the race. Jockey Raul Ramirez Jr. offered some right handed encourage- ment, but when his mount started to drift in, he switched to the left. That helped them to finish a neck in front of the field.
The three-year-old bay filly banked the first place check worth $15,000. That ups her total earnings to $48,590, and her race record now stands at four wins from 12 starts. Her team includes owner Triple Enterprises Inc. and trainer Miguel Rodriguez. Bred in Utah by Speed LLC, First N Sassy is out of stakes winner Jess Sass Me. The
mare earned over $110,000 on the track and as a broodmare has produced thirty six foals, including Champion Jess Walking Thru, Champion Sass Me Blue, stakes winners Valiant Jess, Jess Being Valiant, Fire And Sass, Sassy On Fire and First N Sassy, and two stakes placed winners.
Ss Classyjess (Rock Solid Jess-High Class Broad) showed grit and finished second for owner Edgar Rosales and trainer Jose Carrizales. Juan Garcia was handling the reins. Krash Course (Krash Cartel-Rare Eye Opener) ran a steady and even race to take third
for owner Martha Nevarez and trainer Riojas Jr. David Alvarez was in the irons. Followed by BV Comeback Kid (Corona Cartel-Eyesa First), DM La Jolla (Highclass La Jolla-DM Bella Mia), Kas Tempting (Tempting Dash- Beaukas), Game Overtime (Fast Prize Jordan-Good Game Meg), Katherinessecrethope (No Secrets Here- Royal Stiletto), TDZ Slinkys Fire (Highest Fire-Dashn Slinky Gal).
