MY FAVORITE CARTEL
by Tracy Gantz
My Favorite Cartel, like his dam, the stakes winner Chicks Tell, has made all of his starts at Los Alamitos. Owner/breeder Martha Wells raced
Chicks Tell under the tutelage of the late, great Blane Schvaneveldt. My Favorite Cartel is trained by Matthew Fales, and they combined for the geld- ing’s first stakes victory in the $25,000 Town Policy Stakes on Nov. 10.
When the gate opened in the 400-yard Town Policy Stakes, My Favorite Cartel broke on top and bulleted to the front under jockey Erasmo Gasca. Scoopie Jess tried to catch them, but never could, as My Favorite Cartel held on to win wire-to-wire by
a neck in :19.922, posting an 89 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of purse boosted the gelding’s total lifetime earnings to $38,350
My Favorite Cartel qualified for this year’s Governor’s Cup Derby-G3, but a bumpy start elimi- nated his chances in the final.
Wells bred My Favorite Cartel out of Chicks Tell, winner of the 2002 Huntington Beach Handicap. She has produced 100% money earners from 28 starters, including California Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Gelding and top earner Forrest Fire. My Favorite Cartel is her second stakes winner.
Cesar DeAlba rode Scoopie Jess (One Sweet Jess- The Rose Princess) to second for owner Two Feathers Series LLC and trainer Bret Vickery.
J. Garvan Kelly, Nancy Yearsley, and J. Lloyd Yother’s homebred Splendid Cause (Apollitical Jess-Answer The Dream) finished third under Carlos Huerta for trainer Juan Aleman.
Completing the field were On Our Way (One Sweet Jess-Attack The Cartel), Famous N Hot (One Famous Eagle-Sizzling), Twenty One Gunz (First Moonflash-Jess Charming), La Rusa (Walk Thru Fire-Corona Fria), and AR Royal Blue (Favorite Cartel-Ynot Bar).
Dreams Come True Ranch Stakes
TWISTED SIFTER
by Tracy Gantz
Dreams really did come true for Twisted Sifter, who captured his third consecutive stakes at Los Alamitos in the Nov. 17 Dreams Come True Ranch
Stakes. He was winning his eighth career start. Jonathan Roman has piloted Twisted Sifter in all
but one of those victories. He got Twisted Sifter out on top when the gate opened in this contest, and the race was never in doubt.
Favored at 2-5, Twisted Sifter led throughout the 400 yards, his winning margin 1-length. The gelding stopped the timer in :19.868, posting a 90 speed index.
Third in the Vandy’s Flash Stakes earlier this year, Twisted Sifter won the Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap and Chingaderos Handicap prior to the Dreams Come True Ranch Stakes.
The 3-year-old bay gelding brought home the $13,000 winner’s share of the purse for owner Ronnie Brooks Keller and trainer Roman Figueroa, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $67,677. Twisted Sifter has a race record of 18-8(3)-2-3(1).
Corner K Quarter Horses LLC bred Twisted Sifter out of 3-time winner Bye Bye Baby Goodbye. She has produced 100% money earners from 11 starters, including top earner Blue Corazon, who won the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 earlier this year. Twisted Sifter is her third stakes winner.
Jess Bet Me (One Sweet Jess-Miss Kittys Bar Bet) finished second under jockey Cruz Mendez for owners Herasmo & Salvador Hernandez and Jose Gutierrez. The gelding was trained by Rodolfo Viramontes.
Ruben Lozano rode Down For Debate (Tres Seis-Tiny First Down) to third for owners Jose & Silva Pantoja and Jorge Verduzco.
Missmerizing (PYC Paint Your Wagon-License To Thrill) ran fourth and was followed by Babe Can Fly (Foose-Babe On The Fly).
A Ransom Handicap
TOTAL CHANGE
by Tracy Gantz
Total Change made his stakes debut in the $25,000 A Ransom Handicap at Los Alamitos on Dec. 7. Not only did he win, he upset Twisted Sifter, who was going for his ninth victory of 2018.
When the gate opened, Total Change zoomed to the front and was never headed under Jose Nicasio. They battled with Twister Sifter throughout, always holding the favorite at bay.
Total Change defeated Twisted Sifter, crossing the wire a 1/2-length in front. They completed the 350 yards in :17.724, posting a 91 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total lifetime earnings to $27,243.
Jaime Gomez trains Total Change for owner Bobby Cox, who purchased the gelding for $87,000 at the 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale from breeder Dr. Ed Allred. Total Change previously broke his maiden and won an allowance race in seven starts, with two thirds.
Allred bred Total Change out of placed Make Over. She has produced six winners from seven start- ers, including top earner New Look, winner of the 2012 El Primero Del Ano Derby-G2 and the 2014 Los Alamitos Championship Challenge-G3. Total Change is her second stakes winner.
Twisted Sifter (FDD Dynasty-Bye Bye Baby Goodbye) and Jonathan Roman were second for owner Ronnie Brooks Keller and trainer Roman Figueroa. Twisted Sifter remains the nation’s lone Quarter Horse with eight wins with 24 days remain- ing in 2018.
Martha Wells’ homebred Jazzy Icon (Texas Icon- Icebreaker) finished third under Erasmo Gasca for trainer Matthew Fales.
On Our Way (One Sweet Jess-Attack The Cartel), JD Wagon Boss (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Elly Mae) and Better Than Ever (Kiddy Up-Life Changer) completed the order of finish.
