RULE HE WILL TB
by Tracy Gantz
The Thoroughbred Rule He Will does his best racing at Los Alamitos. With the $20,000 Snowbound Superstar Handicap on Dec. 9, he was winning his second stakes and his seventh win in 11 starts at the track.
Sent away the 11-10 favorite, Rule He Will prompted the early pace of Run Raging Rhino Run in the 870-yard Snowbound Superstar. With apprentice and leading Los Alamitos Thoroughbred rider Kellie McDaid in the saddle, he passed his rival to win by a 1/2-length in :44.746, posting a 103 speed index.
“At the start of the year I never imagined that
I would finish as the leading Thoroughbred rider,” McDaid said. “It’s been an amazing year filled with great memories.”
Previously at Los Alamitos, Rule He Will captured the Truly A Pleasure Quarter Horse & Thoroughbred Handicap for trainer Jerry Wallace II and owner William Branch. Rule He Will has won races at both Los Alamitos Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred meets, and he has won twice at Santa Anita.
The late Kjell Qvale bred Rule He Will out of unraced Sonoma Bred. She has produced two Thoroughbred foals, both winners.
The third dam, Love Conquers All, was a mul- tiple stakes winner and earner of $149,783.
Run Raging Rhino Run (FDD Dynasty-Love That Six), one of two Quarter Horses in the field, finished second. Minor Arana rode the gelding for owner Dan Wilson and trainer Felix Gonzalez.
Vinnie Bednar piloted Miss Loujean TB (Unusual Heat-Tempting Date) to third for owner Dr. Ed Allred and Keith Craigmyle.
Completing the field were Tavasco Road TB (Tavasco-Romantic Road), Rough Passage TB (Stormy Atlantic-Queen’s Play), El Koreano TB (City Place-Bridge To Gold) and Rare Ed QH (Dean Miracle-Ms Corona Jet).
Stablewood Farm Stakes
TOUGH TO FIGURE
by Tracy Gantz
Tough To Figure notched her first stakes win in the $25,000 Stablewood Farm Stakes at Los Alamitos on Nov. 17.
Ridden by Vinnie Bednar, Tough To Figure was brushed at the break, running up fourth early. She didn’t let the start deter her, however, as she surged up to nail the victory by a nose. She completed the 400 yards in :19.982, posting an 87 speed index.
Tough To Figure now has a race record of 5(1)- 6(3)-4(3) from 23 starts. The $12,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed the filly’s total lifetime earnings to $111,383.
Scott Willoughby trains Tough To Figure
for owner Dr. Ed Allred, who bred the filly out
of 3-time winner Big Jan, a finalist in the 1995 Kindergarten Futurity-G2. She has produced nine winners in 17 starters, including stakes placed Yacht Clubber. Tough To Figure is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Prior to the Stablewood Farm Stakes, Tough
To Figure finished second in the 2017 La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3, 2017 California Breeders’ Debutante, and 2016 Holiday Handicap, and third in the 2018 Miss Princess Handicap-G3, 2018 Ivan Ashment Handicap and 2017 Seal Beach Handicap.
Lin Melton trains second-place Maggie Durant (One Sweet Jess-Up Down Dash) and co-owns her with breeder Spackman Racing. Saul Ramirez Jr. rode the 5-year-old mare. Roberto Valero piloted Ima Dashin Follie (Ivory James-Dimples Dash O Denim) to third for owner William Joe Geditz
and trainer Robert Johnson. Precious Dominique (Foose-Dash For Kate) finished fourth, and Stel Chancey (Stel Corona-Let’s Eat Lunch TB) and One Sweet Winner (One Sweet Jess-We Have A Winner) dead-heated for fifth. Late N Dirty (One Sweet Jess- Dashing Diva) ran seventh, followed by You Can Fly (Walk Thru Fire-Babe On The Fly).
Stotz Equipment Stakes
STRIVER
by Tracy Gantz
Striver notched her first stakes win in the $23,500 Stotz Equipment Stakes at Los Alamitos on Nov. 17.
When the gate opened, Striver got away on top under jockey Vinnie Bednar. Though she lugged in, she remained clear and held off the fast-closing odds- on favorite, Tac Me Up, to win by a neck.
The 2-year-old filly completed the 350 yards in in :17.726, posting a 91 speed index.
Scott Willoughby trains Striver for owner Juan Carlos Chavez. Striver finished second in the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2 and also was a finalist in the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 and Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2.
Chavez purchased Striver from breeder Dr. Ed Allred at the 2017 Los Alamitos sale for $17,000.
The filly now has a race record of 9-2(1)-3(1)-1 and the $13,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed her bankroll to $117,826.
Allred bred Striver out of 2000 Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist Motherless. She has produced 100% money earners from 13 starters, including 2014 Jens L List Memorial California Bred winner Conquer All and Striven, who was runner-up in the Elko County Fair Derby earlier this year. Striver is her top earner.
Allred also bred Ronas Sound, the second dam, who won the 1995 Ruidoso Derby-G1 and the filly division of the QHBC Sophomore Classic-G3.
Christopher O’Dell trains second-place Tac Me Up (Kiddy Up-Tacatrina) for his wife, Wendy, and son, Colten and Dr. Ruth Barbour, who owns the gelding. Eduardo Nicasio was aboard.
Delayed Steal (Stel Corona-Hot To Hit) finished third under Ramon Sanchez for owner Ronnie Brooks Keller and trainer Roman Figueroa.
Cava Yee Tah (Sports Cartel-Spanish Sola Mark) finished fourth after stumbling leaving the gate. Jodee B Valiant was scratched.
