Jess Dashn scored his first stakes victory in the $19,000 Mike Hastings Memorial Stakes at Turf Paradise on Dec. 9.
Under jockey Elias Gutierrez, Jess Dashn broke in third, but quickly grabbed the lead at the first call. He remained there throughout, crossing the wire 3/4-length in front.
Jess Dashn covered the 400 yards in :20.095, posting an 88 speed index.
The gelding earned the $11,544 winner’s share of the purse, pushing his cumulative earnings to $47,984. Juan Figueroa prepped the gelding for owner Carlos Manuel Reyes.
Tommy Bouldin bred Jess Dashn out of unraced Dashing Nights. She has produced 100% money earners from two starters. Jess Dashn is her first stakes winner and top earner.
His second dam, the homebred Blazin Nights, won the 2006 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes-RG2 at Sunland Park and ran second in Arealstraitheart’s 2005 Zia Futurity-RG1 at Ruidoso Downs.
Jess Dashn traces back to his fourth dam, Merrily Merrily, a multiple stakes placed daughter of 1979 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Pie In The Sky. Raced in New Mexico and Arizona, Jess Dashn has won four of 13 outs and has earned $47,984.
Dig Deeper (One Sweet Jess-Halfpast Aheartbreak) and Jose Arriola-Serrano were second for owner/trainer Alex Torres-Casas.
Melesio Arvizu’s Matts Corona (Corona Czech- Homemade Miracle) ran third under Rodolfo Arvizu for trainer Ubaldo Guerrero.
Special Train (Sports Cartel-On A Special Train) finished fourth and was followed by El Tipasso (Walk Thru Fire-Prima LD), Liddle Doc (FDD Dynasty-Her Dashiness) and Jenna Cartel (Big Daddy Cartel-Jenna James).
AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity
FIRST LADY PERRY

Second-fastest qualifier First Lady Perryearned her first stakes win for owner Scott McDaniel in the $48,735 AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity on Dec. 9. Ridden by Mark Jasso for trainer John Allred, First Lady Perry broke in second from the 3-post and slipped briefly into third. The filly quickly recovered, grabbing the lead at the wire and crossing a neck in front.
The pair covered 400 yards in :19.989, posting a career-best 91 speed index for the filly.
First Lady Perry collected the $24,367 winner’s share of the purse, boosting her total lifetime earn- ings to $34,224.
First Lady Perry has now won three of seven outs. She made her local debut with a nose victory in the first of three AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity trials on Nov. 18.
First Lady Perry was bred by McColee Land
and Livestock LLC out of unraced First Lady Amber. She has produced 100% money earners
from 12 starters, including top earner and New Track Record setter Streakin Down, winner of three stakes, including the 2010 Heritage Place Derby-G1. First Lady Perry is her fourth stakes winner.
Jessa Cat (Stray Cat-Jessa Runner) was second for owner/trainer Jose Botello. Martin Osuna rode the filly.
Valerie M. Velazquez’s Ur My Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Prima LD) finished third under Emilio Tapia for trainer Armando Castellanos.
AHS Blue Boy (Jess Louisiana Blue-Ror Seasick), Showmethedoe (No Secrets Here-Bundle Doe), Check This Wagon (Paintyourownwagon-Check
N Chick Out), Im Rocket Man (One Dashing Eagle-DLT Runaway), and Sassy Krystal (Heza Fast Dash-Sassy Corona) completed the order of finish. Fastest qualifier One Famous Icon and Jess Echeson were scratched.
AQRA Turf Paradise Derby
HIGHER ICON

Fastest qualifier Higher Icon sprinted to his first stakes win in the $52,535 AQRA Turf Paradise Derby on Dec. 9.
Ridden by Ernie Aispuro, Higher Icon broke third from the 3-post, quickly moved into second and crossed the wire a nose in front of the field.
They completed the 400 yards in :19.901, post- ing a 93 speed index.
The gelding brought home the $26,268 winner’s share of the purse for owner Jesus Avila and trainer Eloy Navarro, boosting his current bankroll to $60,092.
Campaigned in California and Arizona, Higher Icon has won five of 15 starts. He was second in last year’s Desert Classic Futurity and The Plan Handicap and won his Nov. 25 trial to this race by 1/2-length for the fastest qualifying time.
Higher Icon was bred by Martha “Mimi” Wells out of winner Flyhigher. She has produced 100% winners from five starters. Higher Icon is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Juan A. Macias’ Corona Thru Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Corona Perfection) was second under Rodolfo Arvizu for trainer Ubaldo Guerrero.
Unregulated Cash (Favorite Cartel- Checkcashingability) was placed third after a stewards’ inquiry resulted in the disqualification of One Spicy Eagle from third to eighth for bear-
ing out and costing several rivals a better placing. Unregulated Cash was ridden by Martin Osuna for owner/trainer Jose Botello.
Marshall Valentine (The Bounty Man-Terri Tazer) placed fourth and was followed by Cowgirl N Up (Texas Icon-Secret Return), Rose Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-First Faded Rose), Priceless Mr Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Southern Price) and One Spicy Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Tres Spice). Valiant Flier and Royal Prize Dash were scratched.
