JESS BEIN THE HERO

Jess Bein The Hero won his fifth stakes race of the 2017 season in the $21,000 Sam’s Town Stakes for 3 year olds and up at Evangeline Downs on Dec. 16. The black 4-year-old colt stepped into the gate
as the odds-on-favorite, recording only one finish with a speed index under 103 for the year. He broke fourth from the 6-post under Manuel Gutierrez, and the pair mounted an early 1/2-length lead at first call. Driving from start to finish, Jess Bein The Hero maintained the 1/2-length lead at the stretch, but was challenged at the line, finishing only a head before Icanonlyemagine. They flew down the 350-yard fast track in :17.350 and recorded a 104 speed index.
Jess Bein The Hero, who may have spent more time in the winner’s circle than on the track in 2017, bagged another win for owner Juan Martinez- Labastida and trainer Miguel Rodriguez. The winner’s share added $12,000 to the colt’s lifetime earnings, totaling $110,553. He also won this year’s Swift Stakes, Streakin La Jolla Stakes, Miss Polly Classic Stakes & Evangeline Dash.

Icanonlyemagine (Swingin Jess-Real Or Imagined) was second under Noe Castaneda for owner Bobby D. Cox and trainer Kenneth Roberts. Eye N Capo (Capo de Capi-Satisfeyen) was third under Damian Martinez for owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor and trainer Josue Ponce.
Dutcher (Apollitical Jess-Louisiana Eye Opener), Maxx (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Bullions N Garters), Kid Can Dash (Down N Dash-Quickid Perry), Graceful Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Duplicate Check) & Memphis D Nasty (FDD Dynasty-Jess A Cartel) completed the field. Barefoot Beach scratched.

PLAY MISTY FOREME

Jose Luis Enriquez rode Play Misty Foreme to a 1/2-length victory in the $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap-RG1 for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park on Dec. 16.
Prepped by Jose Luis Muela for owner Robert D. Smith of Ruidoso, New Mexico, Play Misty Foreme covered 400 yards in :19.067 while posting a career- best 102 speed index. The $51,000 winner’s share of the purse bumped the 4-year-old gelding’s earnings to $283,266 from 20 outs, all in New Mexico.
Play Misty Foreme was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms in Veguita, New Mexico. The sorrel gelding is one of 13 winners from 19 starters foaled by Arbor Mist, who won the 2004 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby-RG3 at Albuquerque Downs.
Play Misty Foreme is a full brother to Ms James, who was a finalist in two New Mexico-bred futuri- ties in 2012, including the New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2 at Sunland.
Of Play Misty Foreme’s lifetime bankroll, $154,988 has been pocketed this season. All told, the gelding has won seven races, including the 2016 Zia Derby-RG2 for state-bred sophomores at Ruidoso Downs.
Runner-up Major Bites (Jesse James Jr-Dyna Mo Rime) was ridden by Jose Montoya for owner Israel Bordier and trainer Jesus Carrete. Yudes Jess Dashin (Jess A Chicks-Baby Doll Dash) ran third. Felipe Garcia-Luna was up for owners Scott Bryant and Justin Joiner, who also trains the gelding.

Far West Futurity
L BAR D RAZLE DAZLE

LBar D Razle Dazle ran into black type on Oct. 30, winning the $30,604 Far West Futurity at Portland Meadows.
The gelding made a clean break from the 2-gate and was running second as he entered the stretch, then chased down One For The Brothers to win the race by 1-length. Hector Magallanes trains L Bar

Owned by Herman Torres and Tryn Espelien, L Bar D Razle Dazle reached the winner’s circle for the second time in six starts and reaped a $12,620 payday, boosting his total earnings to $16,785.
The sorrel gelding broke his maiden in his prior out, a 1 1/2-length wire-to-wire effort in his Oct. 16 trial for the Far West Futurity, and followed that by winning the stakes by daylight.
Bred by Darrell and Linda Sanders, L Bar D Razle Dazle becomes the third stakes winner out of winner Dash Home Deb, who has produced 100% winners/ ROM from 8 starters. Top earners L Bar D Snow Princes won the 2012 Sun Downs Distaff Challenge and set a 220-yard New Track Record at Portland Meadows, while L Bar D Sweet Fantsy was victorious in last year’s Evergreen Park Distaff Challenge.
Magallanes also trains runner-up One For The Brothers (One Famous Eagle-One Sweet Dash), who is owned by K&R Allred Ranch, LLC, and had Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa aboard. Morning Brew (Agouti-Jess Takin Off) finished third for owner Jose Juan Baca and trainer Tiffani McDevitt. Robert Burney drew
