as the 5th fastest. Pulido stuck with PYC Legacy for the final, and he went off as the second choice to fastest-qualifier Piano Man Sam.
PYC Legacy drew outside for the final and was able to avoid some bumping trouble inside that eliminated Fun N Fire’s chances. “He got a good break, and that was the main thing,” said Melton. “We knew that if he’d get a good break, he would be really tough, especially being on the outside.”
PYC Legacy rushed up quickly from 4th and was soon racing in 2nd. He kept closing ground, nabbing the win at the wire by a nose while completing 300 yards in :15.353. “It was pretty exciting,” said Pulido. “He broke great and it was really tight—but the way he finished. I helped break this horse at the farm and taught him how to rip from the gate. He is always business.”
PYC Legacy helped himself between the trial and the final as well, according to Melton.
“In the trial race he just finished so strongly and he did it with ease,” said the trainer. “He’s really quiet. He laid down and rested more than the other two for those two weeks after the trials.”
Melton has been around horses all his life, starting in rodeo and team roping. His barn currently includes about five runners for PYC Legacy’s connections. The trainer also spoke highly of RJ Having Fun, another 2-year-
old gelding by PYC Fun N Fancy. Owned by Josefina Guzman and Corinna Sosa, RJ Having Fun broke his maiden at Remington March 16, also ridden by Pulido.
Jonathan Chavira bred PYC Legacy in Oklahoma, and Melton said that Sosa purchased him privately from the breeder. PYC Legacy has
already outdone his sire in one respect. PYC Fun N Fancy finished 2nd in the 2017 Oklahoma Futurity before winning two stakes. Melton said that PYC Legacy may get a chance at the rich Heritage Place Futurity-G1 later in the Remington season.
PYC Legacy is out of Chavira’s homebred mare Issys Legacy and is her first reported foal and starter.
Francisco Calderon piloted Dashin Hocks (Kiss My Hocks-Braggin N Dashin) to 2nd for trainer Juan Diaz Jr. & owner Carlos Ponce. The gelding debuted in his Oklahoma Futurity trial, winning it as the 4th fastest.
Pearl Hart (Freighttrain B-Legyslator), owned by Debbie Grimes, trained by Robi Meche, and ridden by Ricky Ramirez, ran 3rd. The filly also debuted in the trials and won her heat as the 9th fastest.
Followed by Piano Man Sam (Tres Seis-Paint Your Pie), Kams Relentless (Hes Relentless-PV Queen Bee Candy), Colleys Cartel (Carters Cartel-A Friend In The Sky), Dodge City (Favorite Cartel-J Fire Up), Fly On Sister (Flying Cowboy 123-Bringitonsister), JT True Grit (Capo De Capi-Redneck Kitty), and Fun N Fire (PYC Fun N Fancy-Dolls In Fire). A stewards’ inquiry into bumping early in the race resulted in no change.
Owner Rito Sosa leads PYC Legacy and Juan Pulido to the winners circle.
