PERRYS SECRET
by Michael Cusortelli
The eighth-fastest qualifier from the April 12 trials, Perrys Secret sprinted to a wire- to-wire victory in the $323,571 West Texas Futurity-G2 finals at Sunland Park on May 5.
Prepped by Josue Ponce for owner Almada Racing of San Antonio, Texas, and aided
by a reported 9-mph tail wind, Perry Secret defeated second-fastest qualifier and 2-1 favor- ite Return Of Brown Eyes by a head in :14.921. Manuel Gutierrez rode Perrys Secret, a gray Texas-bred gelding.
Perrys Secret earned a 103 speed index, as well as the $152,078 winner’s share of the $323,571 purse.
The gelding was bred by Jackie Sessions of Jacksonville, Texas, and he made
his career debut in the sixth of 12 West Texas Futurity trials. In his heat, Perrys Secret made a sharp effort and scored a neck victory.
“He showed a lot more maturity between the trials and the final,” stated Ponce of Perrys Secret. “He got out in front early in his trial and was by himself, but he kind of stopped a little.
“He was pushed in the
finals, and he ran strong
throughout the entire race,”
the trainer added. “It was like
he came back knowing what
racing is all about, and he faced
better horses in the final. (Runner-up Return Of Brown Eyes) gave him a fight the whole race.”
Perrys Secret is the first winner from two starters produced by race winner Sister Jess. The gelding’s second dam, the homebred Royal Baby Sister, earned $172,468 from 25 starts from 2001-03 and won the 2001 Cajun
Kindergarten Futurity-G3 at Delta Downs and the 2002 Bayer Legend New Mexico Derby Challenge-G3 at Ruidoso Downs.
A 1999 foal, Royal Baby Sister has foaled nine winners from 12 starters, including Zoomin Baby, a half-brother to Sister Jess who won the 2014 Evangeline Downs Futurity in Louisiana. Perrys Secret traces back to his
fourth dam, the Raise Your Glass TB mare Pass Your Glass, a finalist in Champion Real Wind’s 1976 All American Futurity and win- ner of that season’s Jet Deck Stakes at the New Mexico State Fair meet in Albuquerque.
Perrys Secret has banked $157,418 from two starts.
