Perrys Secret’s winning connections include owner Almada Racing, trainer Josue Ponce and jockey Manuel Gutierrez
“We’ll rest him for a while, then point him toward the (July 12) TQHA Sale Futurity trials at Retama Park,” Ponce stated. “We had to haul him three times for the West Texas - once for the trials, once for out-of-competition test- ing, and again for the finals. He’s really a laid back and calm horse, and that helped us a lot.”
A $35,500 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Return Of Brown Eyes (High Rate Of Return-Brown Eye Suze) earned $58,253 for his owners, Diamond Racing Stables and US Alliance Logistic. Sergio Becerra Jr. rode the sorrel Oklahoma-bred gelding for trainer Jose Luis Muela. Return Of Brown Eyes won his first start in the trials to the West Texas Futurity by 1 3/4-lengths.
KJ Mucho Macho Man (Apollitical Jess-Wild Six) finished third, 1 1/4-lengths behind Perrys Secret, while pocketing the $35,593 third-place share of the West Texas Futurity purse. Jose Alvarez rode the sorrel Arizona-bred colt for own- ers John Lee, Kathy Lee, and I. Ruben Mares. KJ Mucho Macho Man, who was trained by Wesley Giles, was the final qualifier to this race.
Tempt The Lady (Tempting Dash-Lady Tenaya) ran fourth and was followed by Apollitical J Wild (Apollitical Jess-Bp Shes Southern), Wagon Tales Promies (Wagon Tales-Executive Promises), Mister Mucho Gusto (Freighttrain B-Zumbaya), Tapestri (Favorite Cartel-Jess Genuine), fastest qualifier and 3-1 second choice One Corona Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Little Rebas Corona) and La Dies Coronas (Coronado Cartel-Jess A Ten).
