Tony Doughtie’s homebred TDZ Jet Black Down parlayed a 2-length score in his April 28 trial heat to a determined victory in the $369,405 Louisiana Laddie Futurity-RG2 at Delta Downs on May 18.
Trained by Kenneth Roberts Sr., the bay gelding raced in sixth position early in the 330- yard Laddie Futurity. With a solid, sustained rally under jockey John Hamilton through the lane, TDZ Jet Black Down got up in the final strides to defeat fastest qualifier Ed O, ridden by Noe Villatoro, by a head in a blanket finish.
The winner stopped the timer in :16.691, earning a 96 speed index.
“It takes a lot of hard work to get this far,” said Roberts following his charge’s game victory. “I thank Tony and his wife for giving me the opportunity to work with such good horses.”
Hamilton, who has been aboard TDZ Jet Black Down in all three of his starts, has always had high hopes for Doughtie’s Louisiana-bred runner. “I knew the first time I worked him that he was special,” Hamilton said following the stakes score. “Tonight, I was hoping to be a little further in front, but he got the job done.”
It was the second win for TDZ Jet Black Down from three career starts. The $184,703 winner’s share of this purse increased his bank- roll to $192,593.
TDZ Jet Black Down
was a $10,000 buy-back at the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale in 2017.
Tony Doughtie bred TDZ Jet Black Down out of five-time winner Miss Barton County. TDZ Jet Black Down is her first foal.
“Miss Barton County
could run all day,” said
Doughtie of the winner’s dam.
“She was very consistent and always tried hard. Being by Toast To Dash, we bred her to Jet Black Patriot because that cross works really well.”
As for TDZ Jet Black Down, the breeder/ owner says they have been high on him all along. “Kenny thought he was a good horse,” Doughtie said. “He had shown it in his workouts. When he debuted and finished third, he earned an 88 and then came back and boosted it to a 92, so he has shown us that he has talent. In the Laddie,
I was a little surprised he was around 4-1. We figured we had a shot if he came away from the gate clean. We figured at least a top three finish for him, but he ran great and won for us.”
Runner-up Ed O (Mr Piloto- Shezadashinatcha) ran gamely in defeat, leading
for much of the trip before being caught late. The $4,700 LQHBA Yearling Sale gradu- ate is owned by Edwardo Lopez and trained by Jose Lopez. The sorrel gelding, a winner in his trial dash - his only other start - was bred
in Louisiana by Anthony Gaspard and E.A. Landry Jr.
RF Apolliticalcookie (Apollitical Blood-One Famous Cookie) and Jesse
Levario finished third, just a neck behind
Ed O. Saddled by trainer Josue Ponce, RF Apolliticalcookie is owned by David Gutierrez and was bred in Louisiana by Rogers Farm, Tim and Jennie Rogers. The brown gelding, a $5,700 LQHBA Yearling Sale purchase, also finished third in his trial heat behind Ed O.
Jess Redwhiteandblue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Ha Chi Mama), Love The Way You Fly (Furyofthewind-Lovethewayyoulie), Candy Coated Rogue (Heza Fast Rogue-All About The Candy), Blueacrossyoumind (Jess Louisiana Blue-Doivercrossyourmind), JRS Sir Pop A
Top (Sir Runaway Dash-Pop A Top Special
Pi), and JJ Jess An Meteorite (Jess An Idea-The Meteorite) completed the order of finish.
