Trainer Arturo Davila III qualified three horses to the $459,700 Grade 2 Sam Houston Futurity on May 3. He came away with the Exacta, as Trump My Record and Pa Cha Ching, both trained by Davila and the two fastest qualifiers, finished one-two.
Trump My Record, owned by Davila’s brother-in-law, Cruz E. Nava of Lytle, Texas, brought a perfect record into the Sam Houston Futurity. He debuted at Louisiana Downs, win- ning both his trial and the finals of the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3. At Sam Houston Race Park in the April 13 trials to the Sam Houston Futurity, he scored in his heat by 1 1/2-lengths to qualify with the fastest clocking.
Eddie Sanchez has been aboard Trump My Record for every start and was back again for the finals. Bettors sent Trump My Record off as the 3-5 favorite over a track rated good.
The colt was out of the four-hole well and quickly took the lead in the 330-yard race. While Pa Cha Ching tried to challenge him, Trump My Record held off his stablemate in a drive to the finish, winning by 1/2-length.
Trump My Record completed the distance in :16.543, which was good for a 104 speed index. That was not far off the Sam Houston track record, set by Kiss My Hocks in his trial for the 2014 Sam Houston Futurity. Kiss My Hocks, later named the year’s Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Colt, won the finals as well.
“He’s phenomenal,” said Sanchez of Trump My Record. “He broke well and in front. I could see Pa Cha Ching coming, but he got to the wire in time. I’m speechless.”
Family plays an important role in Davila’s life. “I want to dedicate the win to my grand- father, Alejandro Dovalina, who lives in San Antonio,” the trainer said. “He brought horses into our lives and is a big part of our success.”
Racing Trump My Record in Texas meant so much to Nava and Davila that they supple- mented him to the Sam Houston Futurity for $7,500. They were rewarded with a first-place prize of $183,880. That brought Trump My Record’s total bankroll to $301,532.
“We feel so blessed,” said Davila. “He just keeps doing it. I think tonight he really put a stamp on how good he is.”
Nava purchased Trump My Record for $10,700 from breeder Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP at the 2018 Texas Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale. The owner and trainer noted that they are hoping to run Trump My
Record in the TQHA Sale Futurity this July at Retama Park. Also under consideration is the Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park.
Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches bred Trump My Record in Texas from winner Breck N Records. The mare is a half-sister to Aha Moment, who was third
in the 2012 All American
Futurity-G1, and Man Who
Would Be King, third in the
2011 Gillespie County Fair
Futurity-G3 and 2013 King
William Handicap.
Trump My Record’s
second dam, Thrill And
Grace, won the 2007
Harrah’s Entertainment
Derby-G2 and ran second in
the 2008 New Mexico Distaff
Challenge-G3. This is a
family rich in black type. The
third dam, Dela Creme Smash, set a New Track Record when winning the 1989 Remington Park Futurity. Dela Creme Smash produced multiple graded stakes winner Victory Defined, as well as Toughest Test, who ran third in the 2000 Ruidoso Futuirty-G1 and qualified to that year’s All American Futurity.
Pa Cha Ching (Tempting Dash-Toole N Round), who is bred and owned by Pat Allen, finished second with Ricky Ramirez in the irons. The colt debuted in his futurity trial, winning the race by a length and qualifying the second fastest.
Jesse Levario rode A Painted Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Third Painted Sign) to third for owner David Gutierrez and trainer Josue Ponce. A Painted Dynasty ran second at Louisiana Downs in his debut before winning his futurity trial to this race for the third fastest time.
Rounding out the field were Domino CD (Dominyun-Cindys First CD), Rusty Blood GL (Apollitical Blood-Dusty
Rusty), Doc Hockaday (Kiss My Hocks- Deans Dusty Bunny), Shes No Illusion (The Louisiana Cartel-Jess An Illusion), Mystic Lake (Seperate Interest-Mystifying), Jess Dashin Along (Down N Dash-Jess Marcy) and Sensational Senator (Louisiana Senator-I Opening Sensation).
