BIG DADDY JEWEL
by Michael Compton
Big Daddy Jewel picked an opportune time to score his first win for owners Chris C. Dunn, David Dunn and Rebecca Jameson and trainer
Heath Taylor. The Louisiana-bred son of Big Daddy Cartel broke his maiden with an impres- sive come-from-behind score in the $104,705 Old South Futurity at Delta Downs on May 11.
With regular rider Randy Edison in the saddle, Big Daddy Jewel was
the third-fastest qualifier
for the main event. In the
finals, Big Daddy Jewel raced near the back of the pack away from the gate in the 330-yard fixture. With a strong late charge, he rallied through the lane, collaring early leader and 34-1 long shot Locomotive to win by
a head. Sent off at odds of nearly 6-1, Big Daddy Jewel stopped the timer in :16.722 over the muddy sealed track,
earning a 95 speed index in his first career win. The $52,353 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $56,933.
In his 3 prior starts, Big Daddy Jewel had finished second twice, once at Louisiana Downs in his career debut and in his trial heat April 20 where he finished second to Ivory Bones. That
winner and was a $13,000 acquisition at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
Old South Futurity runner-up Locomotiv (Freighttrain B-Shescheckinumout) showed speed under David Alvarez, opening a 1/2-length lead early before drifting out and getting caught by the winner late. The Bobby Cox homebred was saddled by Kenneth Roberts. Cox and Roberts also finished 3rd with Apollitical Xpression (Freighttrain B-Apollitical Pac) with Donald Watson in the irons. Followed by Dash Master Queen (Dash Master Jess- Brimmertons Queen), Chasin de Stars (Capo
de Capi-Star Tour TB), Chicks Ivory House (Ivory James-Chick Gone Wild), A Game Jess (Game Patriot-Jess Caroline), Jess Worthy (Dash Master Jess-Worthy Affair), Worth A Google (Tres Seis-Rieda Hay Worth), and Ivory Bones (Ivory James-Presumptuous TB).

Daddys Beats (Big Daddy Cartel-Sugar Beats) broke well and showed a lot of deter- mination to finish third under Jose Ruiz for owner Maria L. Villegas-Najera and trainer Jorge A. Morales-Flores.

Runner Chick battled her way to her first stakes victory in the $175,051 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity-RG3 at SunRay
Park on June 2.
Under regular rider Jaime Leos, the
filly broke in third, quickly moving into second. Runner Chick dueled throughout with Meleros Dash, crossing the wire a head in front. They completed the 350 yards in :17.638, posting an 88 speed index.
Runner Chick brought home the $82,274 winner’s share for owner J. Patricia Gonzalez and trainer Juan Gonzalez, boosting her total lifetime earnings to $83,274.
Killer Humberto Lopez Gaxiola bred Runner Chick out of two-time winner Eyesa Runner, who was third in the 2006 West Texas Futurity-G1 and Hobbs America Futurity. Runner Chick is her first starter.
“We bought this filly straight off the farm where she was raised,” said trainer Juan Gonzalez. “We didn’t get her until February and we were always a little late in her train- ing. But we had to give her credit because she is so smart, maybe one of the smartest horses I’ve been around.
“Within a week we were going to the track with her,” he continued. “Her first out was
in the (May 18) trials and she did better than
we expected. In the finals, she made us sit up and pay attention. We might have a big time runner here. She’s a little nervous and immature around the barn, but she’s all business on the track. She’s not paid up in anything, so we are going listen to her and let her tell us what’s next. It’s very likely we will point her towards the Zia in Hobbs.” Meleros Dash (Next
