Wyoming Downs Futurity
WINNERS BLACKGOLD
by Michael Compton
Winners Blackgold justified his 9-5 favoritism in the $47,550 Wyoming Downs Futurity on Aug. 9 with a hard-fought victory in the 350-yard dash. With Tyson Lusk in the saddle, Winners Blackgold broke sharply and flew to the lead at the break. The sorrel gelding was pressured the length of the lane, but held strong all the way and was never headed to defeat Lacey JS Little Sis by a neck.
Winners Blackgold stopped the timer in a lively :17.515 and earned a speed index of 107 for trainer Chancey Spencer, who also saddled 3rd-place finisher Brooks Runaway. The final clocking was just ticks off of BH Dash of Ginger’s 2006 track record of :17.120.
Owned by A & C Racing and Roping of Roosevelt, Utah, Winners Blackgold now boasts 2 stakes wins, having previously annexed the Beehive Futurity, a 300-yard test that he also won in wire-to-wire fashion. All told, Winners Blackgold has now won 4 of 5 career starts after finishing 2nd in his career debut in April and has amassed earnings of $41,770. The gelding won his July 26 trial heat for the 4th fastest clocking.
Bred in New Mexico by Chad Richard, Winners Blackgold is the 1st winner and initial stakes winner from 2 starters for his dam, winner Blackgold Playgirl.
Lacey JS Little Sis (Carters Cartel-Lacey JN Me) surged late to finish 2nd under Uriel Dominguez. The Oklahoma-bred filly is owned by Allie Sam & trained by Ron Moosman. Eddie Garcia piloted fastest qualifier Brooks Runaway (Brookstone Bay-A Fast Runaway) to 3rd for A and C Racing and Roping. The Utah-bred broke her maiden in her previous start in the trials. Followed by Gone Fast (Meter Me Lucky-Beautiful Ashlee), Brookstone Lady (Brookstone Bay-Rose Colored Lady), First Dashin Dahl (First Down Vike-Dashin Belladena), Elite Eight (Azyoucansee-Visual Evidence), DJD Special Stone (First Prize Stone-DJD Shes Special) & RGR Noble Illusion (First Down Illusion-RGR Noblese Chick). Lady Liberty Bay scratched.
Wyoming Downs Derby
FIVE BAR SASSY
by John Moorehouse
Five Bar Sassy finished second in her July 25 trial for the Wyoming Downs Derby, but when it came time to run the stakes final, the sophomore filly had
no equal. Five Bar Sassy won the $26,500 stakes on Aug. 8 in resounding manner, pulling away to win by an authoritative 2-length margin.
Samuel Barker owns Five Bar Sassy, who notched her seventh win in 13 starts. The filly has a 7-5-0 record all time, finishing out of the money just once to date in her racing career. The $12,455 payday from this event increased her cumulative earnings to $45,889.
Five Bar Sassy easily was the class of the 10-horse field. The filly broke from the 9-hole and was running fourth at the first call, then made a huge move, seizing the lead and opening a 1-length advantage by the time she entered the stretch. None of the other competitors had an answer. Five Bar Sassy doubled her lead, and sported a 2-length margin as she reached the finish line.
The 400-yard trip took :19.898, registering a 102 speed index. Riley Moosman trains Five Bar Sassy, and jockey Uriel Dominguez was in the irons.
The Five Barkers, Inc., bred Five Bar Sassy and home-bred her dam, Five Bar Fly, a 2003 mare who has six foals. Five Bar Sassy is the only starter thus far out of the mare.
A & C Racing and Roping owns the other 2 horses who hit the board, both trained by Chancey Spencer. Runaway Brooks Bay (Brookstone Bay-A Fast Runaway) & rider Tyson Lusk out-nodded Blissful Bay (Brookstone Bay-Blissful Beth) & Eddie Garcia for second place. Followed by CIR Mark Of A Queen (Mark My Dial-CIR Queen Of Style), RNL Makn An Exit (Maknmoves-Needaexitnow), BK Katniss (Hard Hitting-Lotta Kat Moves), Laceys Firstwrangler (First Wrangler-RNL Lacey Lane), Make Em Believe (Mr Jess Perry-Shelbys Surprise), Show Me Your Glory (With Honors-Miss Fancy Layne) & Brooks Fly Away (Brookstone Bay-Blue Birds Fly).

JAKE GOLD BR
by Tracy Gantz
For the second year in a row, Brazilian-bred Jake Gold BR has earned a berth in the Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1. Last
year he qualified by winning the South American Championship Challenge, while this year he did it at Los Alamitos in the Aug. 16 Bank of America Los Alamitos Championship Challenge.
Paul Jones has handled the horse since he shipped to California, and once he acclimated, Jake Gold BR has performed consistently well. He went off as the 4-5 favorite in the 440-yard Championship Challenge. With Cesar DeAlba aboard, Jake Gold BR broke on top from the rail. Despite repeated chal- lenges from Ric Oh Shay and French Fury, he held them off throughout to win by a head in :21.854.
Jake Gold BR was voted the South American Champion last year. He also won the Christmas Invitational Handicap at Los Alamitos in 2014, and he has placed in two graded stakes this year.
Clodoaldo de Oliveria Miranda of Brazil owns Jake Gold BR, and the late Gianni Franco Samaja bred him from his homebred mare Charlotte Bryan, who won twice at Los Alamitos. Jake Gold BR is the mare’s only reported starter.

Ric Oh Shay won back-to-back races at Los Alamitos earlier this year and is multiple stakes-placed. Rodolfo Arvizu rode French Fury (Stoli-Streakin Jessie Gail) to 3rd for trainer Guillermo Morales and owner Angel Villalobos.
