Adequan RET Derby Chal.
VOLCOMS THUNDER
by Danny Camp
Things were getting a little tight on the inside, horses were starting to drift in, and riders were pushing hard in the 400-yard $55,890 Adequan Retama Park Derby Challenge on Aug. 8.
Volcoms Thunder left the 5-post in the middle of the pack, and the 3-year-old sorrel gelding had some ground to make up. Jockey Cipriano Vidana had to balance hustling hard and keeping his mount straight. In the end, they crossed the wire 1/2-length in front and stopped the timer at :20.428 for an 82 speed index.
This victory makes seven wins out of 12 starts for Volcoms Thunder, and he’s won his last five of six. The gelding won his July 24 trial heat in the same fashion as he won the finals, breaking generically and coming on hard on the end. The effort earned him the fastest qualifying time.
With the $25,709 first place check from the finals, Volcoms Thunder now has a total bankroll of $207,752. His connections include owner/trainer Raul E. Galvan, and he was bred by P. K. Thomas in Texas, out of Ill Getcha Good. The mare was stakes placed three times and owns a 106 speed index. She has produced 100% money earners from her six starters. Volcoms Thunder is her top earner and only stakes winner.
Marys Coronitas (Corona Cartel-Inbetween Dances) left the gate without urgency, but rider Juan Garcia provided the needed effort that resulted in a 2nd place check for owner Jorge Luis Mendoza & trainer Jorge Mendoza. Freakin Runaway (Ocean Runaway- Streakin Freakin) made a stellar run after a slow start and took 3rd place at the wire under Luis Ramirez for owner Michael S. Amburn and trainer Mike Robbins. Followed by Jumpn Streak (Jumpn-Juanas Streak), Time For Wine (Mr Jess Perry-Fine Wines), Cyclone Vic (Pool-I Wana Fly), Miss Fast Jeans (Ivory James-Fast Jeans), Flier Dash (Special Leader-Christie Jo Dash), Million Dollar Kiss (Jess Louisiana Blue-Stoli Kiss) & Stolin Wagon (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Xo Kate).
Live Oak Handicap
ZOOMIN EFFORTLESSLY
by Danny Camp
Folks often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, and that’s why it’s recom- mended often. Santos Carrizales knew that to be
a fact, so he twirled his stick as soon as he left the 3-post under Zoomin Effortlessly in the 350-yard $15,000 Live Oak Handicap at Retama Park on Aug. 7. The rider motivated his mount well and often, resulting in a first place finish.
Zoomin Effortlessly broke third from the gates, was in 2nd at the top of the stretch, and crossed under the wire in 1st place a neck in front. The gelding tripped the timer in :18.026 for an 86 speed index. The 1st place check of $9,450 takes his total earnings to $80,651, and he now has a record of 10 wins out of 17 tries, including the last 4 in a row and his last 9 of 12.
With the Live Oak Handicap victory, Zoomin Effortlessly is a 3-time stakes winner this year. His other wins came in the TQHA Classic-RG3 and the TQHA Sire’s Cup Stakes. He also set a New Track Record at Retama Park this year, finishing 400-yards in :19.493. He has a career-high 109 speed index, and in 2014 was named the Texas Hi-Point Claiming Horse.
Zoomin Effortlessly is owned by Telesforo Perrett and is trained by Edelmiro Carrizales. The gelding was bred by Tommy R. Charbula in Texas, and is the first stakes winner out of Royal Quick Affair. The mare has produced 100% money earners from her two starters.
Leaving the 1-post in front was Snipes And Bites (Vrrroom-Br Corona Sensation) under Damian Martinez, who was riding hard. That effort was good enough for second for owner Pete A. Scarmardo and trainer Brian Stroud. Iknow Heknows Iknow (Tres Seis-Dashing Patriot) held on for third under Luis Ramirez for owner Louis Plascencia and trainer Jose D. Camacho. Followed by Msg Image Of Sixes (Streakin Sixes-Fetching Image), Zoomin Tac (Jess Zoomin-Sexy Tac) and Meduzza (Ragazzo-La Jolla Suspect).
San Marcos Handicap
THE FIELD CRICKET
by Danny Camp
Ahard-knocker. That’s what they call them on the backside - those horses that make their money
a little at a time. The Field Cricket is one such horse, and he overcame a hard knock at the break to win the San Marcos Handicap at Retama Park on Aug. 8.
With a sharp 16 mph headwind, the 870-yard dash was worth a total of $15,000. Under the guid- ance of jockey Jerry Yoakum, The Field Cricket ran up the lane like the classy horse that he is. As they turned for home around the turn, the 7-year-old gelding drew away from the pack to finish 4-lengths in front. On the way back to the winner’s circle, the gelding still had quite a bit of pep in his step.
The Field Cricket stopped the clock at :47.060. With first place money of $9,150, he now has a bank- roll of $151,506 and a race record of 10 wins from 39 races. His previous stakes victories include last year’s San Marcos Handicap as well as the B. F. Phillips
Jr. Handicap-RG3, the Universal City Handicap,
& the Lone Star Distance Challenge. The gelding was stakes placed an additional 8 times, and is a 3-time stakes finalist. In 2012, he was awarded Texas Hi-Point Aged Gelding honors, and again in 2014.
The Field Cricket is owned by Claud R Denson, trained by Jesse Yoakum, and bred by Mary Denson in Texas, out of ROM earner Quick Lil Cricket. The mare has produced 4 winners/starters, but The Field Cricket is her top earner and only stakes winner.
Speed Bok (Boknaai-Wish I Dustem) ran a steady race to take 2nd under Donald Guynes for owner/ trainer John Boegner. Dashers Midnight (Some Dasher-Sheza Moon Bar Baby) came on strong to fin- ish 3rd under Santos Carrizales for owners Elaine & Joe McAnally and trainer James Gerhards. Followed by Furys Folly (Furyofthewind-Alikazam), Eyes Your Date (Eyesa Special-Elimidate) & Woerner Mountain (Gone To The Mountain-Frosty Gray Mist). Bling Bling Bok & Corona La Jolla scratched.
