Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby
MAVARA VEGAS
by Tracy Gantz
Afew months off and a change in location have done wonders for Mavara Vegas. Alejandro Medina bought her last fall and now has a filly who is undefeated in two starts at Indiana Grand Race Course—her trial and final of the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby.
In her trial, Mavara Vegas defeated Fast Man Vic by a nose as the fastest qualifier. Those two turned the final into virtually a two-horse race. Both broke well and spurted ahead of the rest. Mavara Vegas, ridden by Jose Ruiz, caught Fast Man Vic at the wire to win by a neck in :19.807 as the 6-5 favorite.
Last year, Mavara Vegas won one of five races while racing at Los Alamitos and Prairie Meadows. Medina then bought her, and Sacramento Chavez trains her for the owner.
Dunn Ranch Ltd. bred Mavara Vegas in California from Jess Like Vegas. Mavara Vegas is
the mare’s first winner from three starters. Jess Like Vegas is a full sister to stakes-placed Queen Of Torts, the dam of stakes winner First Down King and stakes-placed Winter Is Coming.
Walter Harrison’s homebred Fast Man Vic (Mighty Invictus-Precious Debutante) was second, 2 1/2-lengths over 3rd place, with Alvaro Hernandez-Lopez aboard. Richard Rettele trains the gelding, who finished sec- ond but was awarded first money in the 2014 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity. Jose Beltran rode Eye Popping (Mr Eye Opener-Shes Jess Special) to third
for trainer Larry Abney and owner Duke Racing LLC. The filly has won one of eight starts. Followed by DNA Ivory Chrystal (Ivory James-Floyds Chrystal Bell), Jess Curl My Prize (Spit Curl Jess-First Prize Joy), Iz Special James (Ivory James-Special Wave), WRS Secret Dream (No Secrets Here-WRS Dare To Dream), Girls Can Dash (Separatist-Coronas Rouge) & RC Tac Man (Tac It Like A Man-Ms Eyelene). De Mille, Fast Prize Alive & This Wagon Is Mine scratched.
Leader Of The Class Stakes
WH DESIGN BY DASH
by Tracy Gantz
WH Design By Dash is having a terrific 2015. After a quick tune-up race in May, he has been perfect, and he scored his second consecutive stakes victory when he captured the Aug. 1 Leader Of The Class Stakes at Indiana Grand Racecourse.
Victor Olivo rides WH Design By Dash regu- larly, and the partnership has coalesced into many victories. When the gelding came away from the gate a little slowly in the Leader Of The Class, Olivo was able to straighten him up and power past the two ahead of him. WH Design By Dash got rolling and won the 350-yard Leader Of The Class by 1/2-length in :17.943 as the 3-5 favorite.
“He was leaning in the gate at the break,” Olivo explained about the slow break.
Paul Martin trains WH Design By Dash for Julie Rae Martin. In June, WH Design By Dash won the Born Runner Classic, and last year he was 3rd in the Blue River Derby. He has also placed in 4 other stakes.
Greg Morrison bred WH Design By Dash
in Indiana from Fast Mans Dash. The mare has produced 4 winners from 7 starters, including 2012 Jaguar Rocket Stakes winner WH Johnnie Boy Red.
Randy Smith owns/trains 2nd-place Cant Catcha Corona (First Corona Home-Special Birthday). Juan Guerrero rode the 3-year-old gelding, who won last year’s Gordon Mobley Futurity. Sparky McClone (Hard Hitting-Somethin Fast) was 3rd with Shanley Jackson in the irons. John McCreary trains the 3-year-old gelding for owner Jane Lehman. Sparky McClone ran 2nd in the 2014 Speed Sale Stakes. Followed by Heza Fast Del Rey (Heza Fast Dash-Stolia Del Rey), Eyesa Mighty Wave (Wave Carver-Eyesa Special Doll), LDZ Special Jess (Jess Special-Ladonna LDW), Sin Tachas Angel (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Sin Tacha Perry), HF Mighty Chick (Mighty Corona-Dashs Rhythm), Air Born Doll (Special Elan-Air Born Babe) & Achieve The Speed (Achievement-Salient Tsunami TB).
Speed Sale Stakes
MY LOUISIANA ROD
by Tracy Gantz
Yearlings can get themselves into all sorts of trouble. Miss Louisiana Blue managed to crack
a shoulder as a yearling and as a result never raced. But she is turning into a good broodmare, as her first foal, My Louisiana Rod, captured the Aug. 1 Speed Sale Stakes at Indiana Grand Race Course.
My Louisiana Rod didn’t even make it look close. With Juan Guerrero aboard, she broke fourth from the rail. Several horses near her bumped with each other, but My Louisiana Rod accelerated so quickly that she avoided any trouble. She sailed home by 2 1/4-lengths as the 2-5 favorite in :16.852 for the 330 yards.
Gordon Timm bred My Louisiana Rod in Indiana from Miss Louisiana Blue. Randy Smith owns and trains the filly, who also ran second in the Gordon Mobley Futurity.
“We ran her through the sale as a yearling,” said Timm, “and she brought $13,000 and Randy bought her. We have two more at home, a yearling filly by Escondido Beach, and a weanling filly by Brookstone Bay.”
Miss Louisiana Blue’s dam, Sassys Miss Okie, won the 2006 Rocky Heinzig Stakes.
She Is Mighty Classy (Mighty Corona-Clearly Hateful) was 2nd by a head under Julie Veltman for Carla & Daniel Skeens and trainer Dicky Benton.
She has one other 2nd, a 3rd, and 4th from 3 previous starts. Roy Moore bred/owns/trains 3rd-place Mr Fool Me Twice (Escondido Beach-Foolininthemeadow-TB). Cristian Esqueda piloted the gelding. Followed by Pistol Packin Kid (Kool Quick Kid-Highest Math), Jumpn Chick (Jumpn-Sheza Classy Leader), WH Kenny G (Gold Medal Jess-Designer Dash), Teller
1 (Teller Cartel-Alphas Zoie), WH Express Shake (First To Shake Six-Smoke Free Express), No Time For Trippin (Chicks Dash Easy-Rarestrawflynsharon) & WH Doc Royal (Royal Evening Snow-Fast Mans Dash). WH Robbie Royal scratched.
