 National Championship Dia del Charro
STEL KOOL

Every year, the Hipodromo de Las Americas dedicates a race event in honor of the char- reria, the traditional Mexican equestrian sport.
This event is held on a date that is nearest to the 5th of Feb., or “Dia del Charro” - the “Day of the Charro.” As part of the celebration, the National Championship Dia del Charro race is held at 350 yards, with the winner taking this year’s prize of 322,500 pesos (U.S. $24,808). There were 10 three-year old participants.
The sorrel Stel Kool was the first to shoot from the gates. His movements, with his neck skewed to the right side in his initial strides, reminded me of Allens Cash. Jockey Jose Angel Huerta helped him immediately correct this error and to stay ahead of the group, mov- ing along the left side of the track to cross the finish line at high speed 1 1/2-lengths ahead of the freshman Teller Im First.
the favorites, Maggie Moonpie and Sf Banko Aguerrido, only the latter was able to get a hold of third place, but was disqualified by the track judges and moved to fifth because she moved into the pack and hit Wicked
Fun. The bay from Racing Team Cuadra Las Heveas had a great starting position at the gates, but failed to take advantage of this, and placed ninth.
In the 2012 season, Stel Kool (Stel Corona - Little Kool Barbie) won the «Futurity Rubio,» a race not officially recognized, on July 8 in Racing Track Las Guajolotas near Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, at distance of 325 yards, being the best among 85 participants.
He then went on to win his debut race at the Hipodromo de Las Americas in the qualifiers for the Juvenile Championship on Oct. 14, but he broke slow in the finals and ended up in last place.
He came back on Feb. 4 as three-year old to easily dominate a very competitive group with a time of :17.14 and a speed index of 97; his prize was 193,500 pesos ($14,885 U.S). He was bred in the United States by the group Evans and Evans and Burnett Ranches.
Teller Im First (Teller Cartel-First Down Runner) placed second, having a great first official debut with a time of :17.32. She has been a successful runner in match-racing in southeastern Mexico. She ran for Racing Team Cuadra San Lazaro de Arara, is trained by Victor Manuel Diaz and was ridden by Jose Trinidad Diaz.
Third place went to the colt Boketeer (Boknaai-Royal Spring Fling) of Racing Team Cuadra Valeria, and saddled by Marco A.
Luna with jockey P. O. Rodriguez aboard.
The rest of the partici-
pants finished in the follow-
ing order: Wicked Fun (No
Secrets Here–Ima Wicked
Chick), Sf Banko Aguerrido
(Sf Royal Bank–Aguerrida
Candorosa), Swingin Corona (Swingin Jess–Coronita Cartel), Henryways (Holland Henry–Azalways), Parker Ty (Pyc Paint Your Wagon–Royal Native Empress), Maggie Moonpie (Teller Cartel–Steel Magnolias), Miss Snow Cartel (Snowbound TB–Racing Cartel).
