                            Anaheim Handicap
FIRST BLACK WAGON
by Tracy Gantz
Though First Black Wagon broke his maiden at Remington Park in his native Oklahoma, he has found a home in California. When he captured the March 2 Anaheim Handicap, he was winning his seventh race at Los Alamitos.
Fans sent 2012 Anaheim winner Jumpn Shake
off as a narrow favorite over First Black Wagon in the five-horse field. Those two battled throughout the 350 yards, Jumpn Shake getting away on top despite a slight stumble. Jockey Ramon Sanchez confidently rode First Black Wagon, who took over midway through and drew off to a half-length victory in :17.479.
Multiple champion trainer Paul Jones trains First Black Wagon for owner-breeder Michael Pohl. The 6-year-old gelding captured his first stakes when he won a division of the John Deere Stakes during the 2011 Bank of America Challenge Night at Los Alamitos.
Pohl also raced First Black Rose, the dam of First Black Wagon. The mare ran second in the 2006 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Derby-RG3
and third in that year’s Oklahoma Bred Derby and QHRA of Indiana Derby. A full sister to stakes win- ner Fast First Dash, First Black Rose has produced six winners from 10 starters. The third dam, Grade 2 winner First A Rose, is a half-sister to World Champion First Down Dash and Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash.
Jumpn Shake (Jumpn-Jess Shakem) ran second for jockey Gregorio Arriaga and trainer Jaime Gomez. Chad Hart and Bobby Cox own the 5-year- old horse.
Jones also trains third-place Kas On Fly (Signed To Fly-Blazen Ofglory 01ibr). Cesar DeAlba rode the 6-year-old horse, who is owned by Ralph Lima Terra and who is a track-record holder in Brazil.
Jus Ledoux It (A Regal Choice-Sometimes You Win) ran fourth, followed by Bar Closer (TR Dasher-Singles Scene).
Garden Grove Handicap
TRES OF LINDA
by John Moorehouse
Tres Of Linda bounced back from adversity on March 3 at Los Alamitos. After finishing a distant seventh in her prior out, the four-year-old filly charged to victory in the $15,000 Garden Grove Handicap for older mares.
Tres Of Linda, who is owned and bred by Joleen Hales and Christian and Ru Anna Singletary, col- lected her third stakes win and sixth overall victory in 13 outs. The $8,250 winner’s share pushed her lifetime earnings past the $150,000 milestone to $150,311.
The filly never threatened in her previous start in the trials to the Los Alamitos Winter Championship. She was a different horse this time as jockey Gregorio Arriaga brought her out of the 3 gate. Though she bumped at the break and drifted in, she was running a close second behind Attack The Cartel at the first call.
Tres Of Linda then surged into the front and led by a nose going into the stretch. Arriaga helped her widen the gap and she reached the wire with
a 1/2-length margin of victory. Trained by Scott Willoughby, Tres Of Linda completed the 350-yard race in :17.634, registering an 87 speed index.
Tres Of Linda’s prior stakes wins include last year’s Los Alamitos Derby Challenge, and the Charger Bar Handicap-G2 held at Los Alamitos in January. Her dam, Lindas Dasher, also holds black type - winning the 2005 Huntington Beach Handicap among seven finishes in the money in stakes competition. Lindas Dasher has six foals, four of whom have made starts. Tres Of Linda is her only stakes winner.
Attack The Cartel (Corona Cartel-Separate Tac) was second for owner Steve Burns DVM, trainer Michael Casselman, and jockey Cruz Mendez. Tac It To Heart (Tac It Like A Man-Let’s Eat Lunch TB) was third for owned Spartan 300, trainer Thomas Bazley and jockey Eulices Gomez. Following were Study Hall Pierce (TR Dasher-Strict) and Check N Fletch (Check Him Out-Shyann La Jolla).
