Sicario V’s winning connections include owner Valeriano Racing Stables LLC, trainer Santos Carrizales Jr. and jockey Francisco Calderon.
winning streak that included the 2022 Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1.
Sicario V brought his own good record into the Rainbow Derby. Last year at Ruidoso, he finished second in all three of his races by only a neck, one of those coming in the All American Futurity-G1. Returning to Ruidoso this season, he won his Ruidoso Derby trial, but didn’t qualify for the final. Instead, he won the Ruidoso Invitational, his first stakes victory, and then in winning his Rainbow Derby trial qualified the fastest.
In the July 15 final, Cyber Attack went off as the 7-10 favorite, with Sicario V the 2-1 second choice. All of the others’ odds were in double digits.
The race came down to those two. Sicario V, ridden by Francisco Calderon, broke from post 9, and Cyber Attack broke from post 3. They battled for the lead early, but Sicario V led throughout the 440 yards. He pulled away at the end to score by 1 1/2-lengths in :21.432.
A very consistent runner, Sicario V has
won four of his 10 starts, with three seconds and two thirds. Valeriano indicated after the Rainbow that he would point the gelding to the All American Derby-G1 and then possibly the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1.
Los Alamitos is where Valeriano found
Sicario V, buying him at the 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale for $240,000. Breeder Edward Allred consigned the gray youngster, who at the time was named Hilarious. Sicario V has now earned $856,286 with the addition of the $337,801 winner’s share from the Rainbow Derby.
Allred bred Sicario V in California from his homebred multiple stakes winner Nymph. Allred also bred and raced Elans Last, Sicario V’s second dam. Nymph has produced
seven winners in nine starters, including stakes winners Monopolist, Nymphette, and Frivolous, plus stakes-placed Nevada Charles.
Sicario V’s family has quite a history with Ruidoso Downs. His third dam, Elans Special, won the 1987 All American Futurity and finished third in that year’s Rainbow Futurity and in the following year’s
All American Derby-G1
and Rainbow Derby.
Cyber Attack (Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose) finished second for jockey Eduardo Nicasio, trainer Christopher O’Dell, and owner Rosenthal Ranch.
In addition to his winning streak, the colt also finished second in the 2022 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and Rainbow Futurity.
Rodrigo Vallejo rode Chasing AJ (Apollitical Jess-Eye On This Candy) to third for trainer Heath Taylor. Steve Holt, Charles Cox, Jack Powers, and Roger Moore own the gelding, who ran second to Sicario V in the 2023
Ruidoso Invitational and third in the 2022 All American Futurity.
Completing the field were Hooked N Gone (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Pretty Girl Kate),
KJ Bootscootin Jess (Apollitical Jess-Xquizit), Aristides (Apollitical Jess-First To Celebrate), Ghost Witha Fire (A Revenant-Dash Through Fire), Town Peak Senator (Louisiana Senator- Eyes A Shazoom), Lethal Viking (Volcom- Lethal Perry), and Scorpion Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Political Scorpion).
Jockey Francisco Calderon celebrates the victory with owner Sammy Valeriano.
