PLANTATION HOUSES
Plantation houses can be found all across the island, usually on hilltops, to
benefit from the island breezes and to be visible from afar. Nowadays you
can enjoy fine food, art, an evening of dancing, a good night’s rest or a stroll
through a museum at one of the landhuizen of Curaçao.
DID YOU KNOW...?
Originally, all plantation houses were painted white. But in 1817, the
Governor and Council of the island decided the reflection of the sun
was bad for the eyes and banned white paint on building exteriors.
Since then, buildings in town and on the plantations have been
painted in soft shades. Ochre yellow was initially the most popular,
but over time many different colors came into use.
