SUNDAY MARKET
For a truly local experience, visit the market in Barber (West Punt) on
Sunday morning. This is where the islanders meet to eat, shop and
mingle. Treats in store include bean cake and raisin bread. Or go for a full
meal cooked on makeshift stoves. Watch for ‘sopi di piska’ (fish soup) and
fresh ‘pika’, a spicy mix of onions and peppers.
ISLAND-STYLE BARBECUE
Cook like the locals - with your feet in the sand and a dip into the
Caribbean sea. You can pick up supplies for a real Curaçao beach
barbecue at one of the island’s many supermarkets. Caracas Bay is the
place to mix with the islanders in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The bay is
one of the biggest around, and incredibly beautiful. As the sun sets on the
rock wall, the fun kicks off with good music, laughter and delicious aromas
in the air. Palapas and picnic tables are available all day long. But if you
want a sun lounger, come early or late in the afternoon when the crowd
thins out a bit. You can set-up your barbecue just three meters from the
water - under a palm tree, if you’re lucky. For the ultimate experience, cast
a line and catch your own dinner!
TRENDY TASTES
Deliciously hip Mundo Bizarro in Pietermaai is known for its Cuban kitsch
with a modern twist. Not far away in Pietermaai is BijBlauw, with a special
children’s restaurant so mom and dad can enjoy their own table for two.
Restaurant Nº 5 (Pietermaai) and New York Curaçao (Sea Aquarium
Beach) are also new and popular.
ON THE BEACH
Karakter is a stylish, modern beach club tucked away in Coral Estate
Resort. Hunt it out and you’ll find a beautiful dining spot right on the beach.
Dine with your feet in the sand, or take a table on the boardwalk and a
bottle of top wine. If you’re lucky, you’ll be joined by dolphins out in the
deep-blue waters. Zanzibar is a longstanding favorite on Jan Thiel Beach
that always has delicious food and great happy hours.
