PART 1 • INTRODUCTION TO THE VASCULAR SYSTEM
1
Vascular Anatomy
Ann Marie Kupinski
OBJECTIVES
Define the major components of the vascular system
Describe the arrangement of the blood vessel walls
Identify the major vessels of the arterial system
Identify the major vessels of the venous system
KEY TERMS
arteriole | artery | capillary | vein | venule
GLOSSARY
arteriole a small artery with a muscular wall;
a terminal artery that continues into the capillary network
artery a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
capillary a small blood vessel with only an endothelium and a basement membrane through
Ultrasound is a medical imaging modality used to define various structures as well as any pathol- ogy within the body. Sonographers and vascular technologists control the ultrasound equipment and the acquisition of the images and thus are vital to obtaining accurate and adequate clinical information. In order to successfully perform an ultrasound examination, thorough knowledge of anatomy is essential. This chapter will present the basic anatomic components of the vascular system. Additional detailed anatomic information pertaining to specific organs, regions, pathology,
which the exchange of nutrients and waste occurs
vein a blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart
venule a small vein that is continuous with a capillary

VASCULAR ARCHITECTURE
Blood is circulated throughout the body by a net- work of arteries, veins, and capillaries. Arteries car- ry blood that is rich in nutrients and oxygen from the heart out to the various organs and tissue beds. Veins return the deoxygenated blood with waste ma- terials back toward the heart. Capillaries are part of
