The measurement of this area is performed in the sagittal plane to the fetus, with the fetus in a neutral position.
The nuchal translucency is optimally measured between 11 and 14 weeks gestation, when the crown rump length measures between 45 to 85 mm.
¡ Care should be taken as to not confuse the amnion for a prominent nuchal translucency, as the fetus may be resting on the amnion.
The normal range of thickness of nuchal translucency is based on the gestational age, although most often a measurement greater than 3 mm between 11 and 14 weeks is considered abnormal and warrants a follow-up examinations and fetal karyotyping.
