Sizing load cells for single cell applications such as a Truck scale
Step 1: find your scale multiple
You can do this a few different ways
1. Add up multiples that are cast into the levers (1 main lever, 1 end extension, 1
transverse lever)
2. Measure each lever from the fulcrum to the tip and divide by fulcrum to load
3. Look at the blueprints, most scales have the multiples printed on the blueprints
Step 2: Determine your dead load
You may have to get creative to figure this out
If this is a hopper, weigh the hopper if possible
If this is a 6”concrete deck truck scale, figure 1000 LBS per foot
Steel deck truck scale figure 600 LBS per foot
Step 3: Determine the amount of weight for dead load
1. Take the number in step 2 and divide by the number in step 1
Ex. I have a FAIRBANKS type- S with a 400 multiple (as determined in step 1)
I am working on a 70’ truck scale with a concrete deck (Step 2)
Take 70000/400=175 LBS, add about 200 LBS for lever weight and you have your dead
load weight
(175+200=375)
Step 4: Determine your live load weight
1. Take your marked scale capacity (120000) and divide by your multiple (400)
120000/400=300 LBS of live load
Step 5: Add your live load and dead load together to size your load cell
375+300=675 LBS
You will need a 1K LB load cell for this scale.
