GUIDELINES IN SPECIES COMPATIBILITY
Since crops are mixed in an agroforestry system, it is important
to know whether the species to be planted are capable.
a. Determine which are dominant crops, the secondary crops,
cash crops, and subsistence crops.
b. Choose shade-tolerant species as understory of sun-loving,
upper-storey species.
c. Choose species that are not allellophatic
d. All species should be adoptable to the site.
GUIDELINES IN SPACING
Proper spacing should be considered to minimize competition
between species in terms of shade and nutrient.
1. For permanent crops (trees), the spacing is governed by the
width of the crown and the extent of the root system at the peak
of development.
2. In multi-storey system, consider the canopy position. Spacing
that will maintain appropriate crown stratification will lessen
competition for light and crown space.
3. For suckering plants (bamboos, bananas, etc.) the spacing is
governed by their desired maximum spatial development.
4. Choose specie which occupy different root horizon.
