Aquatic Certification Classes
Become a lifeguard!
The City of Leesburg offers multiple American Red Cross lifeguard certification classes. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding
course provides entry-level lifeguard participants who are 15 years and older with the knowledge and skills to prevent,
recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden
illnesses until emergency medical services take over. At the beginning of the course each candidate will need to perform a 300- A
yard continuous swim using the front crawl or breaststroke, tread for 2 minutes without support and without stopping, and
swim 20 yards then surface dive to retrieve a 10 pound brick, then return to the starting point with the brick and exit the pool. q
The blended lifeguarding course require 7-10 hours of online course work that must be completed to receive a certification.

Lifeguard Re-Certification
The American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/First Aid/AED certification lasts for two years and to continue their certification,
lifeguards must take a recertification course. The course is a summary of the full lifeguarding course an each lifeguard will need
to complete the prerequisites, be able to perform all rescues and then pass the final written and in water tests. The City of
Leesburg offers a re-certification class one time per year.
Date: May 4th (9:00 am - 5:30 pm)
Cost: $100 per person
Water Safety Instructor
The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates who are 16 years and older to teach
courses and presentations in the American Red Cross swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding
of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Each
candidate should be able to complete the following prerequisites; front crawl for 25 yards, back crawl for 25 yards, breaststroke
for 25 yards, elementary backstroke for 25 yards, sidestroke for 25 yards, butterfly for 15 yards, float or scull for 1 minute and
tread water for 1 minute. The blended course requires 6-9 hours of online course work that must be completed to receive a
certification. Once completed the participants are eligible to teach swim lessons.

Jr. Lifeguard
The American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding course is designed to guide youth, ages 11-14, to the full lifeguarding course by
building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. Participants are not required to master or
perfectly execute skills. They should learn techniques and build stamina during this program. The Junior Lifeguarding course
does not certify participants. Participants must demonstrate the following skills on the first day of class, swim the front crawl
continuously for 25 yards, swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using the pull, breathe, kick, glide sequence and complete the
water competency sequence.
Dates: June 10-June 20 (Weekdays)
Times: 8:15am-12:15pm
