The Southwest District has been busy with events almost monthly since the beginning of the year .
We kicked off the start of the year with an Early Professional Round Table Discussion . This event was well attended and received . We had students and early professionals come from all our local schools and even students from other districts who were in town . Our panelists represented a variety of the professional continuum: Tonya Apke, PT, DPT, OCS; Jon Mathis, PTA, ATC; Kelsey Biller, PT, DPT; Lauren Knasel, PT, DPT; and Kelly Moore, PT, DPT . Our panelists discussed ways to become involved in the OPTA/APTA, general issues with being a new professional, an update on what was going on at the national APTA level, and there was good discussion amongst the group .
 In March, we had a great combined Pub Night with the West Central District at Rusty Bucket in West Chester . This was a great chance to meet up with our counterparts, share ideas, and network with our next-door neighbors .
In May, we were lucky enough to have Eric Bellem, PT, DPT, OCS teach us about the Overhead Athlete . There was a plethora of information to learn and absorb, ranging from pathology to how to return to sport .
In June, we had the group SI Bone come in and talk to us about the variety of tests including specificities and sensitivities of the SI joint. We also heard from therapists and a local surgeon, Dr. Chunduri, regarding surgical fixation of the SI joint . We learned a lot about the PT/PTA’s role in diagnosing SI pathology .
We took July off to rest up for the next exciting events coming up including our Pilates course taught by Ashli Gauthier, PT, DPT on August 15;
a Pub Night at the Cabana on the River on September 6 (facilitated by Apostolis Kametas, SPT from Mount St . Joseph University); PT Day of Service on October 19; Cadaver lab at UC hosted by Lizanne Mulligan, PT, PhD on October 29; and more to come . Please check out the OPTA district website for more information . More importantly come and join us, as we are happy to have you .
On a more personal note, I want to say thank you to all of our district’s members for all of your help in making the district what it is . Our members have been consistent, quick to respond, and prompt to volunteer . Our district would not be what it is without you . It has been an honor to meet and network with members more in my current position. However, if you are interested in finding ways to become more involved in the district, please let me know . I look forward to meeting more of you!
