Research Committee Report Abraham Lee, PT, PhD and Andrew Raschke, PT, DPT, OCS – Co-Chairs
The Research Committee has been very active during the first half of 2019 and digs in deeper this year. The committee has worked with three strategic goals: 1) promoting research activities, research activities, and communicating about research results and/or research processes .
Here is the list of what we have accomplished or is in process of being accomplished:
 CONFERENCE CALL
MEETINGS
We have had four conference call meetings thus far (January, February, April, and June) with participants in the range of 7-12 people in each meeting, discussing the matters related to research .
NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION
We began publishing the newsletter in 2018 to share what is going on among OPTA members in terms of research activities, update in the area
of physical therapy practices, and to facilitate collaborations among the members of OPTA . In 2019, we published the newsletter of the Research Committee twice, once in January (Volume 2, Issue 1) and the other (Volume 2, Issue 2) in May . We appreciate four individuals’ contribution for the Issue 1 (Matthew Briggs, PT, DPT, PhD, Lindsey Brown, PT, DPT, Nic Accordino, SPT, and Cathy Bieber Parrott, MS, PT, Jane Keehan, PT, PhD, OCS) and three individuals’ contributions for the Issue
2 (Andrew Raschke, PT, DPT, OCS, Lucinda Bouillon, PT, MPT, PhD, Abraham D . Lee, PT, MPT, PhD) . We also appreciate contributions by Andrew Raschke, PT, DPT, OCS, and Greg Kline, PT, DPT, EdD, MBA, who have been instrumental to the publications . They either reached out to potential writers and communicated with them or organized submitted articles and sought feedback on a draft of the newsletter until being completed .
GRANT REVIEW/RESEARCH
PROCESS TRAINING
One of important objectives of the Research Committee is to promote research activities by supporting investigators with research funds . This requires the Committee members to evaluate research proposals with research-trained eyes . To improve consistency and quality in evaluating research proposals we are going to train committee members with research-related education materials . Abraham D . Lee, PT, PhD volunteered to coordinate with potential contributors to work on the project . We expect that this training process is slow and incremental in terms of establishing training materials and educating members . But we are very excited with undertaking this new endeavor for the committee .
ACCEPTANCE OF GRANT
APPLICATION
Research proposals were accepted from May 1 to August 1 . Dawn Westfall, PT and Andrew Raschke, PT, DPT, OCS will coordinate grant review processes with grant reviewers . All proposals were reviewed and evaluated during August . Final awardee(s) will be announced and recognized at OPTimize MOVEment 2019 .
